Airfield Chase is the fifth chapter of Angry Birds Rio and the "Rio" section of the game, released in 2011. It is set in an airport at dusk, introducing Terence and gimmicks like platforms and explosive jerrycans. The episode has 30 main levels and six bonus levels, like most of this game's episodes.

Description[]

The episode takes place in an airport during dusk, with the sky colored salmon. The background shows a thick forest and some mountains in the distance.

Story[]

After Blu got kidnapped by Nigel in Carnival Upheaval, the Flock follows the villain to an airport, where they clear the local caged birds. Eventually, using the chicken float from Carnival Upheaval level 30, the Angry Birds successfully board the smugglers' plane as it takes off.

Gameplay[]

Airfield Chase is the first episode since Smugglers' Den to feature caged birds as targets, although marmosets were retroactively added to one of the bonus levels. The chapter introduces Terence as a playable character. New gimmicks include jerrycans, which explode in a small radius when hit, similar to TNT; and oil barrels, working as either blocks or wheels. The chapter has a new material: iron, which, while flimsy, stops the birds' momentum when destroyed. Also introduced are long platforms that can be destroyed with tough blows.

Overview[]

Airfield Chase has 30 main levels. The first 15 were released for iOS and Android on August 18, 2011,[1] with the next 15 releasing on October 3.[2] All 30 levels released for the PC version on November 9, 2011,[3] and on November 16 on the Mac version.[4]

Levels 1 through 15 were originally called "9-1" to "9-15" and levels 16 through 30 "10-1" to "10-15". This nomenclature was removed in the 1.7.0 update in July 2013.

Image Level 3-star score[5] Tips
1 97,000 The first Terence should be fired straight at the tower. With some luck, it will clear all of the cages.
2 87,000 Red should clear the sand platform to slightly weaken the structure. The first batch of Blues should then take out the second floor of the building, while the second batch should release the stone boulders at the top right to destroy what remains.
3 79,000 The first Chuck should aim at the leftmost cages, clearing the left half of the level, while the next Chuck should destroy the first leg of the second structure. The third Chuck may be used for support.
4 103,000 The simplest way to maximize score is to launch the first two Bombs straight to the first building, destroying it and clearing a path for the next two Bombs to the second structure.
5 80,000 The player should launch Terence to the rightmost structure. A lucky shot will trigger a domino effect that frees most caged birds and culminates in the first cart being pushed to the TNT in the far left. Chuck, and sometimes Red, can then take out the remaining cages.
6 108,000 The Blues should destroy the sand block holding the glass panes and sand block at the upper right, clearing the right half. The first Chuck should then be launched through the first structure, clearing it as well. The remaining birds may be used for clean-up.
7 100,000 The first batch of Blues should be launched in an upward angle, destroying the three horizontal glass panes in the middle to drop the TNT box down and clear that portion of the level. The next two batches should then fly through the glass panes of the structure on the right.
8 90,000 The first Terence should clear the top of the lower structure, enabling the second Terence to destroy the lower part of the right tower. Alternatively, the first Terence should be launched to the top of the tower, rolling into the wooden overhang and causing it to fall into the lower building.
9 100,000 Matilda should drop her egg to the right of the first structure, bringing most of it down. Blu can then destroy the second building, leaving only the leftmost cage to be taken out by Chuck.
10
[note 2]
94,000 The first Chuck should take down the tower on the left, allowing Matilda to drop her egg at the back of the plane, causing the tail to detonate the explosives at the far right. The second Chuck can then clear the remaining cages in the plane.
11
[note 2]
77,000 Terence should be fired towards the lower half of first structure. A lucky shot will bring most of it down alongside the sand blocks holding it. This allows Matilda to drop her egg at the left tip of the platform in the middle, clearing the rest.
12 71,000 Matilda should be lobbed rather low, dropping her egg between the structure and the pile of barrels. The outcome is inconsistent but often destroys most of the level, allowing both Chucks to clear the rest.
13 91,000 The player should launch Blu straight to the first structure, freeing both caged birds in it. The first Chuck should be fired in an upward angle, flying through the second stack of planks (which contains a purple caged bird) in the second building to de-estabilize it, with the second Chuck finishing it off.
14 85,000 The first Chuck should clear the first sand platform and the left half of the main structure, with Blu taking out the second sand platform. Matilda should be launched to the gap created by Chuck to take out the rest of the building.
15 109,000 Terence should be lofted in an upward angle, detonating the TNT in the far right. Matilda should then drop her egg to the right of what remains of the structure, causing almost all of it to crumble. Only the leftmost cage should remain, which a Chuck can take out.
16 70,000 Red should take out the first two sand platforms, while Matilda should drop her egg on the first structure to make her fly towards the final sand platform. In the aftermath, Chuck should take out the remaining cages.
17 127,000 The first Matilda should precisely drop her egg in the gap between the first two towers, bringing them down and enabling Bomb to explode at the bottom of the third one, clearing the rest. Both Matildas may be used if needed.
18 125,000 The first Bomb should aim horizontally, through the top and to the heart of the first structure, bringing it down alongside the tower above. The second Bomb should then explode as close to the core of the penultimate building as possible, allowing Matilda to finish off the rightmost structure.
19 100,000 The first Chuck should fly through the top left wooden planks, the caged bird, and the bars on the right of the first structure, giving Blu a path to knock down the middle tower. The next two Chucks should then destroy the platform supporting the final tower.
20 104,000 Bomb should explode at the rightmost structure, taking out all of the cages there. Matilda should be lobbed rather low, dropping her egg over the cart for her to take out the hanging cages. Terence can then clear the pit in the middle.
21 86,000 The Blues should be launched slightly over the cage at the top left, splitting to detonate the TNT in the middle and strike the rightmost structure. This will clear most of the level, allowing Matilda to further damage the first building, and Chuck to clean up the rest.
22 88,000 The first Chuck should knock the leftmost structure rightwards. The first Terence can then clear the first two cages in the plane, as well as those on the platform, while the second Terence and Chuck can free the final two caged birds.
23 110,000 This level can be challenging due to its unpredictability. The first Terence should be launched to the lifebuoys in the middle, slamming into the tower and destroying most of the level. The other Terences may be used for clean-up.
24 103,000 Matilda should aim towards the left leg of the structure, dropping her egg as late as possible to clear it. This allows Bomb to explode at the core and destroy the building. Chuck should then release the TNT at the top right.
25 97,000 Matilda should be launched to the left of the leftmost structure. Bomb can then clear the rightmost structure. Terence may be used for clean-up.
26 95,000 The player should make Matilda drop her egg next to the large cage at the top right, taking out the suitcases there. Blu should clear the leftmost structure, allowing Terence to slam through the hanging boulder and towards the cages at the bottom right.
27 76,000 The first Matilda should be launched downwards, dropping her egg in the middle of the bottom left platform. This will clear most of the level, and the second Matilda can then take out the rightmost barrels to finish the level off.
28 100,000 Matilda should bombard the top left portion of the first tower, knocking it and the top of the second tower down and enabling Blu a shot towards the final structure, where he can knock some blocks into the explosives in the far right. If the middle cage remains, Chuck can take it out.
29 101,000 While very precise, the first Chuck can take out the rightmost cage. The second Chuck should then detonate the TNT above to drop boulders onto the main structure. Blu should clear the wooden pillar at the left, and Matilda can take out the remaining cages.
30 50,000 The final level takes place while pursuing a plane, which drops endless wooden boxes. Red should take out the two cages above, while the Blues should clear the cages at the bottom in a precise shot. Chuck can then take out the cage hanging in the middle and the one inside the plane.

Golden Apple locations[]

Angry Birds Rio Golden Apple collected

A Golden Apple being collected.

As with other Rio episodes, Airfield Chase has 15 collectibles, called Golden Apples, hidden across the episode. Collecting all of them unlocks the "Golden Apple" bonus level.

  1. Level 1: The first Golden Apple is in a bush behind the slingshot. The player can roll the second Terence towards it by pushing him with the third Terence.
  2. Level 2: The apple is in a bush close to the slingshot, and can be obtained with a direct shot.
  3. Level 5: The third Golden Apple is among ordinary apples in a tunnel under the slingshot. The player should detonate the TNT nearby to claim it.
  4. Level 6: This Golden Apple is inside a tiny crate near the slingshot. Simply slamming the crate with direct shots will destroy it.
  5. Level 9: The apple is inside a barrel close to the slingshot, which can be destroyed with a direct shot.
  6. Level 10: The apple is inside a suitcase under the tail of the plane. Chuck should ignite the jerrycan nearby to obtain it.
  7. Level 14: The Golden Apple is in a bush at the far right, and can be obtained by launching a Chuck through the top of the level.
  8. Level 18: The player should destroy a stone boulder near the slingshot to claim this Golden Apple.
  9. Level 19: This apple is inside a suitcase under the third platform. Destroying the platform itself will drop debris onto the suitcase.
  10. Level 22: The apple is inside a barrel close to the slingshot, which can be obtained with a direct shot.
  11. Level 23: A bush close to the slingshot contains the apple, and a direct shot can obtain it.
  12. Level 25: The Golden Apple is in a crate near the slingshot, and can be destroyed with a direct shot.
  13. Level 27: The apple is inside a well-protected barrel at the bottom. The first Matilda should destroy the first platform in the middle and the one at the top, allowing the second Matilda to destroy the labeled barrel.
  14. Level 29: The apple is inside a bush close to the slingshot, and can be obtained by dropping Matilda's egg onto it.
  15. Level 30: The final Golden Apple is inside the wing of the airplane. A precise shot by Chuck can claim it.

Bonus levels[]

As with other episodes, Airfield Chase initially had two bonus levels, acceeded through the Awards Room: one for beating the chapter, and another for finding all Golden Apples. With the 1.5.0 update in December 2012, Airfield Chase received four new Bonus Levels: three are unlocked by gathering 30, 50, and 70 stars in the levels respectively; and another can be accessed by attaining Total Destruction in seven levels.[6] The latter level is inaccessible in the PC and Mac versions due to the Mighty Eagle not being present there. Since the 2.4.0 update in the mobile version, the player can unlock bonus levels in exchange of a certain amount of Bird Coins.[7]

Image Level 3-star score[5] Tips
30 Star Bonus Level 100,000 The first Chuck should detonate the TNT between the first two structures, destroying the first and weakening the second. The next Chuck should then destroy the left foot of the rightmost tower to topple the second building.
50 Star Bonus Level 90,000 The first Red should be aimed towards the blue jerrycan. With some luck, this will clear the first structure. Then the second Red should strike the left foot of the rightmost tower, and with some more luck, this clears the remaining cages.
70 Star Bonus Level 115,000 The player should use Red to destroy the left leg of the rocket, tilting it leftwards and destroying the first tower, then launch Chuck through the rightmost structure to detonate the TNT nearby. Matilda can then destroy any cages that remain.
10 Feather Bonus Level 142,000 Matilda should be launched to the middle of the level, dropping her egg to take out the top right marmoset and the blocks supporting the structure beneath, clearing the right half of the level. One Chuck should then take out the topmost marmoset, while another should clear the blocks supporting the first building to destroy it as well.
Golden Suitcase Bonus Level 97,000 A very inconsistent strategy involves launching the first Matilda rather low, dropping her egg over the leftmost jerrycan and clearing most of the first structure. Terence should then be flung towards the tower on the right to destroy it, as well as the tunnel below. Any remaining cages can be destroyed with the second Matilda.
Golden Apple Bonus Level 100,000 Terence should slam the cart on the middle structure. With some luck, he will detonate the TNT nearby and clear most of the level. Chuck can then take out the leftmost cage.
