AngryBirdsFans (1)

A group of Angry Birds fans in Australia during 2011.

This article is about Angry Birds fans in-general. For the video series, see Angry Birds Fan of the Month.

A Fan is defined as a person who has a strong interest in or admiration for a particular person or thing. In this case, the "thing" in question is about the Angry Birds-series of media.

Generations

2009-2012

This generation is known as the "Original Players". This group of fans have the largest and most diverse group in many fields. A member of this group can basically be any age, since this is when Angry Birds had a wider appeal compared to post-Angry Birds Chrome media. This is the group that favors more of the "casual" gameplay in the Angry Birds games. As well as this, fan sites such as AngryBirdsNest started appearing which documented events in AB games and created walkthrough video tutorials to help players beat a specific level.

2012-2015

This generation is known as the "Golden Age". While the global popularity of Angry Birds was leaning during this time, newer games were releasing, such as Angry Birds Go!, Angry Birds Transformers, Angry Birds Epic, and Angry Birds Stella. The biggest influx of fans came from this era due to the large amounts of manufactured Angry Birds-goods from companies such as Commonwealth Toys, Mattel, Hasbro, Fazer and more. This is where we start to see the series evolve and experiment with ideas to fit the trends of that era.

2015-2018

This generation is known as the "Movie Generation". Since the Sneak Peek Tournament's release in late 2014, current and newer fans were interested in the new designs of the Birds and Pigs. When more trailers and promotional images were releasing throughout 2015, more people found an old/new interest in the series once more. When the movie released across 2016, many received the film to be mediocre, but with the marketability of the film and new brand partnerships in the food and entertainment industry, people flocked to the games once more to relive the days of casual mobile gaming.

2018-2021

This generation is known as the "Hard Times". These fans have witnessed the expansion of the series with new characters from media such as Angry Birds Evolution and The Angry Birds Movie 2 with examples being Zeta, Courtney and Garry. The marketing for the 2nd film in the series wasn't as strong as it was in 2016, however the higher critic approval gave hope to the series as a whole and with the 10th anniversary occurring in 2019, this brought even more fans back to celebrate the decade old game and what Rovio Entertainment was accomplished with the series since then. Sadly around a month before the anniversary, many of the older games such as Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Go! and Angry Birds Epic were delisted from the Appstore and Google Play store due to "testing purposes", so many of the fans during the anniversary were asking the company to relist them once more.

2020 was more of a stale year for Angry Birds fans, with not much occurring besides #bringback2012 being shared on social media to get Rovio's attention to the situation, few games being released such as Angry Birds Casual (now Journey), Angry Birds Tennis and Angry Birds Legends. Also, the Angry Birds Rio and Angry Birds Star Wars games (and its sequel) were discontinued due to the license expiring. This year also saw some older players come back to the series for either short or long periods of time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2021, there were a few new game releases, such as Angry Birds Reloaded, which excited fans, but the fans quickly realized that it is an Apple Arcade exclusive game, meaning that only players with an iOS device and a monthly subscription could play the game. However, mid-2021 was the time that fans were brought together once more all due in part of a single blog post titled, "A letter to our fans." In this letter, Rovio acknowledged the problems longtime fans of the series were going through and came clean about their intentions. They explained that the older games couldn't be updated accordingly due to outdated game engines (I.e: Fusion), so they planned on recreating the original Angry Birds game from the ground up in the Unity engine and there being a possibility for creating new pieces of nostalgic merchandise.

2021-2024

This generation is known as the "Newcomers". This is the generation that is the most recent in times and is alive and well to this day. This is the most active generation and are members of Angry Birds communities on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Discord and more. This generation has also seen many newer and older fans come back to the series with media releases such as Angry Birds Summer Madness and most importantly Rovio Classics: Angry Birds, which could’ve set the stage for more iconic Angry Birds games to be re-released in the future.

In April 2023, Angry Birds and their developer Rovio was acquired by Sega for US$775 million. Many fans were unsure of what Sega would do with the series, but many saw this as a good financial decision for both companies. Later in the year on July 21, many Angry Birds fans who've collaborated with Rovio in the "Angry Birds Community Leaders" Discord server revolted against the company for alleged poor working conditions[1] and mistreatment of the Angry Birds intellectual property (IP).[2][3]

The acquisition by Sega concluded in March 2024.[4] This deal was made in part of Rovio's Beacon platform for managing game development, players, and in-game events.[5] During March 2024, in-game event crossovers for Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Dream Blast, Angry Birds Friends, Sonic Dash, and Sonic Forces made some fans hopeful for the future of Rovio and the Angry Birds brand. In June, fan reaction to the The Angry Birds Movie 3 production announcement teaser grew to over 2 million views between Twitter[6] and YouTube.

On June 6, 2024, fans would get their first look at The Angry Birds Movie 3 in the form of a blog post and announcement trailer.[7] Twitter accounts began to appear that posted fanart[8] and rumors regarding the upcoming film.[9] Many fans were excited for the news[10][11], while others were fretful for what the film would entail.[12][13]

In December 2024, the 15th Anniversary celebrations would occur, which included the Angry Birds 15th Anniversary Comic series that many fans adored.[14][15][16]
