Angry Birds Land was an Angry Birds theme park area located at Thorpe Park in Chertsey, Surrey, England. Opening in May 2014, the area featured three rides and attractions, interactive side show games, the Peckish food outlet and the Flock N' Shop merchandise store. Angry Birds Land was situated in the center of the park, with two of the main attractions previously being part of the former "Calypso Quay" area.[1][2][3]

On October 30, 2023, Thorpe Park announced that Angry Birds Land would be rethemed for the 2024 season as their IP contract with Rovio had come to a "natural end". Following the last screenings of the Angry Birds 4D Experience the following day, the park confirmed on November 16 that the area - along with its attractions - would be reimagined as "Big Easy Boulevard".[4][5][6]

Attractions[]

Angry Birds 4D Experience[]

Main article: Angry Birds: The Ride

Angry Birds 4D Experience was a 4D cinema attraction combining the Angry Birds: The Ride 3D film with various in-theater effects, including water, smoke, vibration, bubbles and a unique "catapult" motion effect. The theater, effects and screen were all provided by Simworx, as part of a major refurbishment of the park's existing 4D cinema.[7][8][9] Though suitable for most guests, the Angry Birds 4D Experience was recommended for guests aged 4 and over, due to "darkness, smoke effects and bangs" at various moments throughout the experience.[10]

On 31 October 2023, Angry Birds 4D Experience was shown to guests for the last time, ahead of its replacement with a brand-new 4D film for the 2024 season.[6][11] The attraction was officially named "Sunset Cinema" on February 17, 2024,[12] with the film itself being announced on March 10 as "Ready Player One: 4D Experience."[13]

Detonator[]

Detonator is a 115 ft Fabbri drop tower ride first installed at Thorpe Park in 2001. Guests are taken to the top of the tower aboard the 12-seat gondola, where they are held for a few seconds before being released and fired downwards by pneumatics. A maximum speed of 46 mph (alternatively quoted by the park as "50mph") and positive G-force of 5.5G are achieved during the descent, making Detonator one of the park's most intense thrill rides.[14] A minimum height restriction of 1.3 m (4.2 ft) and maximum torso restriction of 51 inches apply.[15]

Upon the opening of Angry Birds Land, Detonator was rethemed and initially renamed Detonator: Bombs Away to match the surrounding area. A statue of Bomb as he appears in Angry Birds Space was added on top of the ride's control room, and new audio tracks implemented for the main ride sequence. The original "Detonator" name was reinstated for the 2022 season, though the overall Angry Birds theme remained until the land's closure towards the end of the 2023 season.

Detonator continues to operate at the park as of the 2024 season, now part of the "Big Easy Boulevard" area and with a fireworks factory theme.[6]

King Pig's Wild Hog Dodgems[]

King Pig's Wild Hog Dodgems was a traditional bumper car ride manufactured by Bertazzon, located near the park's Tidal Wave attraction. Guests control one of twenty 2-seater cars themed to either Red or a Minion Pig, each featuring their own accelerator and centrally-mounted steering wheel.[2][16] A minimum height restriction of 1.1m applies; guests between 1.1 m (3.6 ft) and 1.3 m (4.2 ft) must be accompanied by an adult aged 16 or over.[17]

As part of the "Big Easy Boulevard" refresh, the ride was retained for the 2024 season, operating under a new 'gas station' theme as "Big Easy Bumpers".[6][18]

Trivia[]

  • On the day of the announcement that the park would be closing, the Angry Birds website added a new page to their website called "Angry Birds Attractions", which includes Angry Birds Land as of November 2, 2023.[19]
