- "I will wipe that grin off their stupid faces or my name isn't... ...DA BOMB!"
- — Bomb, Angry Birds Comics (2016) #2[8]
Bomb, originally known as the Bomb Bird or the Black Bird, is a character that appears in the Angry Birds series. He is a black bird with the seemingly magical ability to explode, hence his name, making him the most powerful of the Angry Birds. Bomb first appeared in Poached Eggs in the original Angry Birds, and has since then been one of the main characters of the series.
Despite his explosive temper, Bomb is laid-back and fun-loving, often playing with the Blues and engaging in banter with the others. He gets easily bored while making chores. Bomb struggles to fully control his explosions, blowing up on accident more often than not. He always looks for methods to balance his temper, like creating a daily routine and taking up calming hobbies. However, things as simple as his ice cream melting push him to the edge. Although Red finds him to be irresponsible and immature, Bomb is devoted to protecting the flock's eggs and willing to fight the pigs if his friends are in danger.
Appearance[]
Bomb is a round, limbless bird covered in black feathers. He has red, floating eyebrows, and his belly and eyelids are gray-colored. His most distinguishable feature is his short, fuse-like feather with a yellow tip on his head. Early material also had Bomb with a white dot on his head.
For the Wreck the Halls short in 2011, Bomb was slightly redesigned. He is now larger in shape, and his belly patch and eyebrows are smaller. In addition, his fuse is thinner and pointier, and his beak is less bulky. This design was not used again until Angry Birds Toons in 2013, and has been the most common design since then.
Grey Bird[]
Grey Bird is an early design of Bomb, who was one of the three birds shown in the original loading screen for Angry Birds. The loading screen design shows him being a much larger bird with three black crests on his head, and another three pointy black feathers for his tail. He has more far apart eyes with darker-grey eyebags below them, big rectangular black eyebrows, a large pelican-like beak, and strange vertical stitching on his forehead. While the earliest design of the Grey Bird resembles Red but with dark grey feather on his body, white feathers of his stomach, three crests on his head instead of two, smaller close together eyes, slightly darker-grey eyebrows, and a bigger upper beak. This design suggesting that Bomb was originally going to be a recolored counterpart prior when the loading screen design was made.
The image names for Bomb's sprites in Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons are internally referred to as "BIRD_GREY",[10][11] which suggests this bird is Bomb's prototype design.[12] However, numerous people have previously speculated that this bird could have been a prototype Matilda or Mighty Eagle. The latter isn't true, as Mighty Eagle was not conceptualized until 2010, and introduced in the Ham 'Em High update, which would make this bird being the original Mighty Eagle very odd. The former is false as well, as despite their similarities, Matilda's sprites refer to her as "BIRD_GREEN" and her feathers are likewise named "GREEN_FEATHER".
It was later confirmed in 2023 that the bird was Bomb's original design by one of the game's developers, Miika Virtanen. On February 20, 2024. It was officially confirmed on the Angry Birds X account that the bird was Bomb before gaining his explosive power.[13] Although in other posts on the account, Grey Bird is referred to as his own character, further convoluting the question of whether Grey Bird is his own character or not. In one of the posts, it was said Red would get Grey Bird on the account,[14] but then in a later post he says he is researching him[15] despite there being no viable information on him (in-series). Around July 2024 an earlier design for the Grey Bird was shown in the official Rovio Museum website.[9]
Personality[]
- "OK, so Red thinks I should be 'more responsible', but hey, I get the job done. Why shouldn't I have a little fun?"
- — Bomb, The World of Angry Birds Official Guide[6]
Bomb is a fun-loving bird whose primary goal in life is to have "a blast". He approaches life with a mischievous sense of humor, often finding amusement in pranks and thriving on excitement. This laid-back, somewhat immature attitude sharply contrasts with that of Red, who values responsibility and seriousness. While Bomb relishes in the thrill of detonation and delights in pranks, his volatile nature means some of his antics can backfire catastrophically.[5]
Bomb's carefree attitude extends to his views on life on Piggy Island: he finds joy in blowing up anything he can, from rocks and pigs to even his friends in harmless pranks. He hates boredom and is quick to express frustration with mundane chores, strategy meetings and the serious demeanor of Red, whom he believes could benefit from loosening up.[5][6]
Despite his occasional outbursts and tendency to find explosive solutions to simple problems, Bomb generally approaches life with a relaxed attitude. He has a knack for turning tasks into enjoyable experiences, often preferring the easiest and most fun route to achieve his goals.[2][5] However, if the safety of the eggs is threatened, Bomb will not doubt in coming in to lend a hand. After the eggs are saved, Bomb returns to his hammock for some well-deserved rest.[2]
Bomb struggles to fully control his powers and attempts to maintain control through a meticulously organized daily routine. He indulges in soothing activities like soaking in the hot springs of the Hog Head Mountain, sipping herbal teas, tending a Zea garden, taking long walks over the meadows, and smelling the flowers.[1][5][6] This structured life is his attempt to find peace and balance. Bomb, however, is very short-tempered; any disruptions, like his ice cream melting or Chuck's "tests of strength", can invoke his wrath.[1] Despite this nature, Bomb exudes confidence in his abilities, proudly highlighting his explosive powers as his best quality. He remains unapologetic about prioritizing fun over duties, viewing life as an adventure meant to be enjoyed.[6]
Game appearances[]
Angry Birds[]
In the original Angry Birds, and its multiple re-releases, Bomb is one of the core playable characters. He is introduced in Poached Eggs, specifically Poached Eggs 2-5, as the fourth character in the game overall. He appears in all subsequent chapters except The Big Setup. In levels and most cutscenes, Bomb appears in his original design, though the profiles of The Mighty League and the ending cutscene of Jurassic Pork depict him in his design from Angry Birds Toons. Additionally, he had a white dot in his head in early versions which has since been removed.
In gameplay, Bomb can only be used in the levels where he appears, when it is his turn to be launched from the slingshot. Around a second after colliding with an obstacle, Bomb will explode, damaging nearby structures. He can also detonate prematurely if the player taps the screen at any point after launching him. This makes him an extremely powerful character, capable of reducing large fortresses to rubble with his explosions. Bomb himself is nevertheless of moderate strength and performs best against stone, but is ineffective against glass and wood, notably losing all of his speed upon destroying a wooden block. Upon beating the level, the player is given 10,000 bonus points for each Bomb that was not used.
The Short Fuse episode, introduced in v3.4.0 in November 2013, gives Bomb a transformation called Shockwave, which replaces the standard Bomb in this chapter. In this state, instead of exploding, Bomb unleashes a powerful circle of electricity upon detonating that can electrocute any nearby pigs and is much more destructive than his normal explosions. Although he normally only appears in Short Fuse and a few levels of Flock Favorites, Shockwave can be used in any level as a power-up.
Angry Birds Seasons[]
Bomb appears from the very start of Angry Birds Seasons (when the game when it was first known as Angry Birds Halloween) After his first appearance in Trick or Treat, he is then on a playable character in all of the themes that follow. Unlike all of the other installments of the Angry Birds series, Seasons keeps the characters' original designs, so Bomb is in his classic appearance. Once again, Bomb's spot on his forehead is removed. However, just like Chuck's Red-like appearance, Bomb can be seen with his spot in multiple promotions for the original Angry Birds Halloween game. This includes the trailer and early cutscenes for the game which has since been removed. However, it has been proved through these cutscenes that Bomb's spot was light being shined off of him, as the spot appears in a different part of his body depending on the way he is positioned. Because of this, it can be assumed that the spot was removed because Rovio wanted Bomb to be more bird-like with feathers, rather than made like an actual bomb.
Like all of the other characters, Bomb has costumes that can be unlocked by the player. Bomb, like all the other characters, can at times appear as the main character in specific themes for the game. (This happened in Ham Dunk, where he appeared in the cover art alongside Bubbles and The Blues.)
Bomb has the same ability to explode as before, and not much is changed about his size, strength, or speed. In water-themed levels, like Piglantis, Bomb reacts pretty normally to water logic. However, it can be noted that if he hits a structure the second he resurfaces, the player should instantly activate his ability, as once he hits the blocks he will bounce off of them and go back into the water. The Shockwave power-up is back in Angry Birds Seasons. It works completely similar to how it works in the Classic Angry Birds game. However, in the paid Ham Dunk levels, the power-up is converted into the State Farm Bomb power-up, which's fuse and electric rays are red instead of blue.
Angry Birds Rio[]
Bomb does not appear early on in Angry Birds Rio, but rather in the Beach Volley episode. He is not captured with Red, Chuck, Jay, Jake, and Jim, but it can be assumed that he travelled there in order to help them. This is the first time that Bomb isn't introduced when the game is first released, but through updates. After his introduction level, he appears in all of the themes that follow.
Bomb and the other members of the flock manage to defeat Nigel and free all of the rare birds, and hijack the plane and go back to Piggy Island, where they arrive just in time to save the eggs from being stolen by the pigs once again. Bomb and the other birds later on travel back to Rio to visit their friends Blu and Jewel, beginning the Rio 2 segment. In this portion of levels, Bomb receives a different design like all the other characters. He is modeled after his Toons appearance, receiving slightly changed features in his beak, eyes, and eyebrows, and gets better shading and different outlining.
Bomb bears the same ability that he has in the previous two installments. No changes are made to his speed, strength, or size. High Dive introduced water features to Rio, and it works the same way that they do in Piglantis for Bomb.
It is notable that caged birds/dolphins and marmosets are much more tougher than the poppable pigs, so Bomb cannot destroy the targets as easily as he can with the pigs. If the player activates his ability near Luiz in Beach Volley, then the dog will fly off into the air, and can destroy blocks and enemies with ease. This is a good strategy to use during the level, but the player must note that he will go after the beachballs, not the structures.
Angry Birds Chrome[]
Angry Birds Chrome is largely a compilation of episodes from Angry Birds Classic and Angry Birds Seasons, so Bomb's ability is largely the same as in those games. Bomb does appear in the game's only exclusive level, Chrome Dimension, taking up the same roll as he does in the other slingshot games. Chrome Dimension lacks a story or cutscenes of any sort, so there's no new story content for Bomb in the game.
Angry Birds Google+[]
Angry Birds Google+ features very little in terms of new additions, with the only two episodes to its name. Those being the returning Poached Eggs and Chrome Dimension, as well as Teamwork which, while having the billing of a new episode, is essentially a continuation of Angry Birds Chrome's Chrome Dimension. Needless to say, Bomb's ability is near identical to his Angry Birds Chrome outing, with the exact same sprites and gameplay.
Angry Birds Volcano[]
In Angry Birds Volcano, Bomb appears as a playable character first introduced in the second level of the game rather than being playable in the first level like many Angry Birds games.
Angry Birds Friends[]
Bomb appears as a playable character in Angry Birds Friends. Bomb is the same as in previous slingshot games. When launched, if the player taps him, he will explode. He is very strong against stone, glass and wood. His explosion is very strong against materials and has an strong shockwave. In the Star Cup, he can be leveled up by obtaining feathers. Bomb also appeared purchasable in the Bird-O-Matic. He can wear any accessory and can be chosen as the player's avatar.
Bad Piggies[]
Bomb makes a cameo in Flight in the Night, where he appears asleep next to Red in one level. Even if the player attempts to land near him or wake him, he will not move and remain asleep. Though he appears in this level, he does not make an appearance in the rest of the levels or any of the other levels as an enemy.
Angry Birds Go![]
Bomb appears in Angry Birds Go! as the second bird (3rd bird in Version 1) to be introduced in the game and is first seen in Seedway. After the player unlocks him, they can use him in any of the races as a playable character.
Like all of the other characters, Bomb receives his own 3D animation for the game. He also appears in his Angry Birds Toons animation style.
Bomb also had merchandising, having a Jenga playset as well as a Telepod figurine.
Gameplay[]
All of the characters have their own unique abilities in the game, and Bomb's is activated once his power-up beaker is filled. Following the trend of previous Angry Birds games, Bomb can explode, causing the birds and pigs near him to be knocked and jolted away.
While the ability may seem effective when Bomb is first unlocked, once the player unlocks stronger characters and progresses to harder levels Bomb will become less and less useful.
The ability is best used when Bomb is near other players, putting him at a disadvantage if the player is far behind other players.
Angry Birds Epic[]
Bomb appears as one of the 5 playable characters in the story mode and is a main character in the game. Once he is unlocked, he is a playable character for the rest of the game. (excluding a portion where he is kidnapped at one part of the game) Bomb appears in promotional art and trailers for the game.
Bomb, like all of the other playable characters, can be customized and upgraded to the player's preference provided that they have enough resources. (Angry Birds Epic)
Gameplay[]
- Main article: Epic Characters
Angry Birds POP![]
Bomb first appeared in the game as a limited edition character and was only available for a short period of time. Later on, the game was changed to a regular Angry Birds game rather than an attachment to the Stella series, and the characters (excluding Stella) were changed to members of Red's flock. Bomb took what was originally Poppy's section, Beat The Clock.
In the Beat The Clock section, the player must assist Bomb in popping the bubbles and blocks. The player beats the level by popping all of the bubbles before the clock's countdown goes to 0. In both of these segments, the player is given a limited amount of bubbles and if the player runs out, then the player loses the level. Bomb, like all of the other characters, has his own special bubble that can be used when the player makes enough pairings. His pop, entitled the Explosive Pop, will pop a line of bubbles that the special bubbles are aiming at. (Angry Birds POP!)
Angry Birds Fight![]
Bomb appeared in Angry Birds Fight! as once again as the tritagonist. He was one out of the 6 playable characters the player could have chosen from and was the first character that the player was introduced to in the very beginning of the game. Other than being a playable character, he also appeared as an icon in the matching board. Certain parts of the game used computer animation, such as the player's customizable characters. Bomb used computer animation when fighting other characters as well as some other parts of the game. He took on his Angry Birds Toons animation style and while other games had their own styles, Fight! takes character animation directly from the Toons series.
Like all of the other birds in the game, Bomb was customizable to the player's preference, and the player would be able to purchase costumes and weapons for Red with in-game currency.
The game wouldn't include direct gameplay with the birds, but rather a tile-matching objective. Matching 3 of the bird icons would have popped the birds out, and matching 4 or more would activate the specific bird's special ability. If 4 of Bomb's icons were matched, then he would explode and cover the panel board of the opponent in ashes. Once the round was over, the two battling players began fighting, and the player's success would entirely be based on how much points they were able to gather together. (Angry Birds Fight!)
Angry Birds 2[]
Bomb appears in the first official sequel to the original game, Angry Birds 2, as once again one of the protagonists. He is unlocked after obtaining a key, which can be used to unlock a character of the player's choice, meaning that Bomb can be unlocked anytime. He returns with his classic ability but he is stronger. The game also introduced computer animation for the birds and the pigs, which had never happened with the previous slingshot installments of the series. (which used pre-set separate sprites for when the bird is idle, flies, etc.) Bomb also appears in his Toons animation style, along with the voice used in the series. In addition, Bomb has his own daily event, named Bomb's Blast, which can be played on Saturdays.
He is strong against stone, glass or wood, he blows up after touching the screen or waiting for him to flash red and then explode. In this game, his ability is stronger, pushing blocks and structures after blowing up. When the player is aiming Bomb, stone objects will be highlighted, indicating that that is the material Bomb is best at destroying. His card can be leveled up using feathers, which increases the points obtained after using him, his card will change form and change color, matching the power of it. (Angry Birds 2)
Angry Birds Ace Fighter[]
Bomb appeared in Angry Birds Ace Fighter, as once again a playable character and tritagonist. He appeared in promotional material and trailers for the game.
Bomb's Description In-Game:
The main goal of Bomb is to enjoy life. He has no interest in tactics, strategic meetings or even tidying his room. He only feels happy when he's setting off an explosion or making mischief
Rovio announced that the game would be discontinuing due to adjustment of structure platform, as well as an expired contract with Siamgame. On September 6, 2016, the game was removed from the Play and App stores and recharge was turned off, making the game nearly impossible. On October 10, servers were shut down.
Gameplay[]
The gameplay was based on a Shoot em up style, with the player located at the bottom of the screen as the enemies fly downwards from the very top. Not much was known about Bomb's role specifically in the game. It was known that he was one of 4 different playable characters, and could be paired with different kinds of planes.
Angry Birds Blast![]
Bomb appears in Angry Birds Blast! as one of the main characters and like most of them, he has to be freed to complete the level. Like most of the characters, he doesn't use his ability in-game. He appears in the black blocks, which if combined with 2 or more of the same color, will free him. Sometimes he gets angry and destroys other blocks as he is freed. He also appears free sometimes. (Angry Birds Blast!)
Angry Birds Evolution[]
Classic Bomb is another version of Bomb in Angry Birds Evolution that can be obtained at events, such as the Bomb Event, his debuting event.
Like all of the other Awaken Birds, he doesn't evolve, but can be trained to become stronger. His abilities are as follows:
- Simply a Bomb: Attacks with an explosion that deals 4556 damage in the center and leaves a field of fire that deals 4556 damage to all pigs within the field for the next 2 turns.
- Damage Bonus Black: All black birds in team get +30% attack power.
- Awaken Skill: Buffs the damage of teammates left and right from the bird by 20%.
Angry Birds Island[]
Bomb appears in Angry Birds Island as one of the main characters and like most of them, he has to be freed to complete the level. Like most of the characters, he doesn't use his ability in-game. He appears in the black blocks, which if combined with 2 or more of the same color, will free him. Sometimes he gets angry and destroys other blocks as he is freed. He also appears free sometimes. (Angry Birds Island)
Angry Birds Reloaded[]
Bomb appears as a playable character in Angry Birds Reloaded. Bomb is the same as in previous slingshot games. When launched, if the player taps him, he will explode. He is very strong against stone, glass and wood. His explosion is very strong against materials and has an strong shockwave.
Angry Birds Racing[]
Bomb is unlockable when the player unlocks the Sliver League, alongside Silver. (Angry Birds Racing)
Angry Birds Block Quest[]
Bomb acts identically to the other two birds who appear in gameplay. When Bomb is on a cleared line, he will move over to another line rather than be removed from the board. When three Bombs are cleared at once, Bomb will appear on the Slingshot, and destroy a three by three area of the player's choosing.
Animated appearances[]
Angry Birds Toons[]
Bomb is featured as a main character in the Angry Birds Toons series and makes multiple appearances in many of the episodes, sometimes the subject of his own. The series shows more depth to Bomb as a character and his interests other than what the games have shown us.
Angry Birds Slingshot Stories[]
Bomb appears as a main character in Angry Birds Slingshot Stories.
Book Appearances[]
Kaiken[]
Bomb only ever appeared once in the Kaiken educational books. He had a cameo at the end of Sing The ABCs where he, along with the other members of The Flock, agree to sing the ABC's with Girl Bird.
Angry Birds: Mystery of the Green Bird[]
Bomb's role in the book is the least substantial out of The Flock as a whole. He first appears when Matilda is introducing Hard Head to the rest of The Flock, where he ends up exploding from surprise as soon as he sees him. He later appears sleeping while on guard duty, leaving The Eggs wide open when Hard Head attempts to steal them.
Angry Birds: Mystery of the Lost Treasure[]
Bomb, alongside Matilda, cameo in The Flock's celebration at the end of the book.
Angry Birds: Red Bird To The Rescue![]
Bomb makes a brief cameo at the end of the book alongside the rest of The Flock, celebrating the return of one of their Eggs.
Angry Birds: Bomb's Best Birthday[]
When Bomb's birthday rolls around, Bomb attempts to strand himself on top of a mountain, as his previous birthdays all ended in him exploding from excitement. Bomb is ultimately cheered up when The Flock, unwilling to let their friend be lonely on his birthday, launch his party right at him via Slingshot. Bomb still explodes from joy, but now has nobody to harm while doing so (with the exception of a group of Minions who were spying on him nearby.)
Angry Birds: Cheer Up, Chuck![]
Bomb starts the story asleep, and is later seen awake during the conflict with Corporal Pig.
Angry Birds: Stella and the Egg Tree[]
Bomb is present with the other core Flock members in the first few pages of the book. He's seen playing volleyball, and appears at the nest when The Eggs are stolen from Stella.
Angry Birds: Red And The Great Fling-Off[]
Bomb is one of the few birds we see participate in the Great Fling-Off. It's implied that Bomb placed well in previous Fling-Offs, as Red assumes Bomb will win a spot on the podium when imagining the upcoming Fling-Off.
Angry Birds: The Attack of The Monster[]
Appearing as a minor character, Bomb is seen accompanying Red and Chuck for most of the book. He and Chuck scout for Pig activity early on, and joins the rescue party for Matilda near the end of the story.
Angry Birds: Captain Badburger[]
Throughout the book, the focus shifts from Stella and Chuck back to The Flock. Bomb consistently comforts Matilda about the pairs disappearance, in contrast to Red's apathy. During the climactic showdown with Badburger and his crew, Bomb is sent a message via Crossbones The Parrot warning of Captain Bigbeard's plan to sneak around back and steal The Eggs. Unfortunately, the message is unclear to Bomb, and the chaos of the battle causes him to miss Bigbeard. While Captain Bigbeard is able to make off with the eggs, they are retrieved by Chuck and Stella. Bomb makes another appearance at the celebration the flock holds.
Angry Birds: The Tale of a Featherless Friend[]
Bomb acts as Red's primary enforcer throughout the book. When Stella brings a new friend into the flock, Red Tasks Bomb with spying on the both of them. When they find out that Stella's friend is truly a Pig, Bomb is set up to guard the Pig's cage. When Stella breaks the Pig free, a mechanism on the cage causes Bomb to explode, alerting the other birds to the escape.
Powers and abilities[]
Bomb is most notable for his ability of exploding like a real bomb, hence his name. His explosions can sometimes be destructive enough to destroy Pig City[16] and create gigantic mushroom clouds that can be seen from afar.[7] Despite his destructive explosions, Bomb always comes out of these with few to no scratches or wounds. While the cause of this remains unknown, Professor Pig has hypothesized that his body is "pompous" and conveys shockwaves thoroughly, so that the energy he releases in the form of explosions do not affect him at all, but rather the objects in his blast radius. However, he also said that magic could be a possibility.[17]
Aside from being able to explode, Bomb is quite strong, capable of smashing through stone. He is also very resistant, having survived atmospheric entry.[18] He can drive a large variety of vehicles, from Mechanic Pig's karts to his own ship, the Bird Ship.
Shockwave[]
- Main article: Shockwave
Through the combination of electricity and a chemical, Bomb can transform into Shockwave. In this state, he can produce electrical shock waves that can electrocute pigs and push structures with force. This transformation first appeared in the original Angry Birds.
Trivia[]
- Bomb is the first bird not to have a corpse sprite. Despite this, there is an unused corpse in Angry Birds Chrome's sprite sheets and in other Angry Birds web games.
- In Angry Birds Classic's sprites, Bomb's sprite name is "BIRD_GREY", which confirms that Bomb's prototype was the Grey Bird featured in the 2009 splash screen. There is also a feather sprite which is gray and has white stripes on it, which could also be a leftover from the old iteration of Bomb's design. In 2024, it was confirmed that the Grey Bird is a prototype version of Bomb "before his explosive powers" [19]
- Originally, Bomb had a white spot on his head, but was slowly removed over time. There was a plush of it that was shortly made in late 2010 to early 2011, but the design was then changed to remove the spot on the plush toy. The design was kept in a few games after that but was removed shortly after.
- Promotional art for Angry Birds Toons features Bomb with a spot, however it is gray, and is only in the artwork, not the show itself.
- Bomb can play the didgeridoo and the accordion, as seen in "Didgeridork."
- Bomb and Willow are the only birds that do not have a tail.
- In some instances such as in Google+ "Teamwork" level selection menu, and in pictures from Angry Birds Trilogy, two gray dots are added below Bomb's left eye, much like Red's.
- Bomb is one of the only two birds that have abilities that involve an explosion, the other is Matilda.
- Bomb has an alternate launch sound in the Flash/Facebook web games, including the Facebook version of Friends before it was overhauled.
- A launch sound for him that was originally unused was used in the in-game trailer for the game and fully used for him starting from a mid-2010 update.
