- "I am a bloodthirsty pirate captain - people always says 'yes' to me!"
- — Captain Badburger, Angry Birds: Captain Badburger
Captain Badburger is a zombie Pig pirate who was cursed to eternally wander the seas after attempting to plunder Skull Island. He runs the Zombie crew aboard the Saucy Pickle, and sends out a small raft to claim more victims to add to his zombie hoard.
Appearance[]
He is a skeletal pirate captain with a leather tricorn hat that has a red bandana beneath and a wilted twig sticking out of it. He has large bushy eyebrows and a long thin beard. One of his eye sockets is empty, while the other contains a big bloodshot eye with a menacing stare. He is wrapped in a tattered black coat with a pair of epaulets on each 'shoulder'.
Personality[]
Captain Badburger is extremely selfish, hateful and expects everyone to listen to him. He is a sadistic and high tempered tyrant who holds grudges when made a fool of. He thinks highly of himself and does whatever he can to get his way, no matter how impossible or immoral it may seem. In spite of his formidable appearance, the captain is no more proficient in a fight than the average Pig, getting completely stomped by Red the first and only time we see him in combat, and largely controls people through fear and intimidation.
With all this said, Badburger isn't always vicious and aggressive. He's shown allowing his lackeys to party and was willing to work with Captain Bigbeard if it meant getting rich. Badburger also has a flare for the theatrics, stopping what he's doing to exposit old stories and tales that are usually about himself. The captain is a bit scatterbrained as well, losing important artifacts with little care.
Media appearances[]
Angry Birds Magazine Issue 3[]
In his debut, he arrives at The Flock's Halloween party under the cover of night. He tells The Flock the tale of some Pigs who he captured and fed to Brian. The Flock initially mistake him for Red, but become confused when Red arrives at the party. As soon as Red appears, Badburger vanishes.
Angry Birds: Captain Badburger[]
Captain Badburger comes across the Hairy Mary, a pirate ship led by Captain Bigbeard. The pair become swift friends, and begin talks of a heist. Two weeks later, the raft that Badburger uses to "recruit" new pirates brings Chuck and Stella aboard the Saucy Pickle. Badburger is able to intimidate them into joining his crew, and gives them tasks that he believes will undoubtedly result in their death. To his surprise, Chuck and Stella survive everything he throws at them. This convinces Badburger to make them a permanent addition to his crew.
Later, Badburger meets back up with Bigbeard, and the two reveal their heist's target to their crews: The Angry Birds' Eggs. Afterwards, Badburger sails to Skull Island to retrieve an army of skeleton warriors for his army, as they are forced to obey whoever releases them. Badburger then sets off for Piggy Island to get The Eggs, but takes note of Chuck and Stella's perceptiveness. He decides to order them to stay behind in case they try something, but by then it's already to late. Stella and Chuck have already befriended most of Badburger's allies, and use them to foil his plan.
They first bribe Crossbones into sending a warning to The Flock (Which ends up backfiring when Crossbones' message causes Bomb to lose track of The Eggs), and then convince Brian to attack Badburger's skeletal reinforcements, sinking the Saucy Pickle in the process. Badburger is confident that his current crew will be enough to beat the flock, but is swiftly proven wrong when he gets unceremoniously brutalized by Red in a one-on-one duel.
Badburger's plan only spirals farther downhill when Bigbeard (who in reality is a Foreman Pig in disguise), betrays him. While Chuck and Stella were able to sink the Saucy Pickle, Badburger is still undeterred, and summons Justin to chase after Bigbeard. While he is able to get revenge on the phony pirate by tossing him overboard, Stella is still able to convince Justin to return her, Chuck, and The Eggs back to the nest. It's not known what happened to Badburger after the raid on the Hairy Mary, but his operations have likely been severely crippled by the loss of his ship.
Relationships[]
Justin[]
Justin is one of Badburger’s pet’s. Whenever Badburger gives the word, Justin appears to act out his captain's whims. It's unknown how Badburger was able to get Justin on his ship (Especially given the ladder's dislike of violence). Justin seems to have some respect for Badburger, and care enough for the captain to continue obeying him willingly.
Badburger often brags about the ferocity of Justin even in situations where he isn't trying to threaten anyone, and seems to show the closest thing to gratitude he can muster when he reunites with Justin after being defeated by The Flock. While this could be read as Badburger genuinely enjoying Justin's company, he seems to keep Justin around more so for convenience rather than friendship, as Justin also acts as a very convenient way for Badburger to push people around. He seems to treat him more like a beloved weapon than a good friend.
Badburger also believes that Justin eats whoever Badburger throws overboard. This is untrue, as Justin is a vegetarian who hates violence. In reality, Justin drags anyone the captain throws overboard to a deserted island, assuming they'll never tangle with Badburger again.
Crossbones[]
While Badburger considers Crossbones to be the closest thing he has to a friend[1] and loyal minion, the truth is that Crossbones' allegiance is held by whoever feeds him better food. As soon as Stella starts feeding Crossbones pickled onions, he covers for and carries out whatever Stella asks. Badburger is oblivious to Crossbones' traitorous nature. With that said, Crossbones does at least enjoy getting a rise out of Badburger, as he repeats Chuck's "No" to Badburger to rile him up.
Brian[]
An indeterminant amount of time ago, Badburger attempted to cook Brian, but locked him in within the ship when he proved too unwieldly. Badburger refers to him as Crusher, and sends new arrivals into his cellar to be eaten. Being treated so poorly has given Brian a distain for the captain, causing him to be easily swayed against him by Stella.
Saucy Pickle Crew[]
While Badburger did kidnap a majority of his crew and turn them into zombies , he doesn’t seem to antagonize them like he does with Chuck and Stella. He allows them to throw parties , lets them in on his heist plans, and spares them his otherwise bountiful threats and insults. His crew members obey Badburger without question, and seem to get a little excited when the captain is enacting his wrath upon others.
Skeleton Warriors[]
As the Skeleton Warriors spend very little time with Badburger in the book, we know little about their relationship with him. They are forced to obey them when he releases them, as they are cursed to do so. Badburger interacts with them very little outside of barking orders to them. It is known that Badburger was aware of the literal skeleton crew before the events of the book, which makes sense given how they were cursed on the same island.
Chuck and Stella[]
Badburger seems to treat Chuck and Stella far more harshly than the rest of his crew, even after deciding to keep them. He is aware that they may be up to no good during his attempted theft of The Angry Birds' Eggs, leaving them on the ship instead of bringing them to the nest. Despite this, it's never made clear if he learns of their treachery at the end of the book.
The Flock[]
Like most else he meets, Badburger has no regard for the lives of The Flock, and planned to steal their Eggs to sell off to King Pig. Unfortunately for the captain, he made the mistake of underestimating The Flock in combat, which earned him and his crew an embarrassing defeat at the Cobalt Plateaus.
Captain Bigbeard[]
During their time working together, Badburger seems to enjoy conspiring with Bigbeard to steal The Flock's Eggs. He overlooks several signs of Bigbeard's dishonest nature, and is shockingly patient with him until Justin blasts his disguise off. Needless to say he is far less friendly with Bigbeard after he's unmasked as a Piggy kingdom spy, tossing him into the ocean to be eaten by Justin.
King Pig[]
While Badburger never crosses paths with King Pig himself, he distains the monarch heavily for his dislike of piracy. Captain Badburger would happily turn any Piggy kingdom conspirators he met into mince meat and burgers.
