Hog Moon Rising is the forty-ninth episode in Angry Birds Reloaded, released in V3.21. It is set in an illuminated forest. This episode marks the return of the Werepigs from the Rise of The Werepigs Tournament in Angry Birds Friends, making it the first episode in Reloaded to use assets from the original game its code was based on. In addition, several sound effects from Angry Birds Space have returned and replaced spaceBlast01 from where they should've been used in the same update.

Overview[]

Hog Moon Rising takes full advantage of the background, as the moon is bright green and has a faint pig snout-like crater. When a certain orb is struck, the clouds will move away and cause all pigs in the level to turn into Werepigs, becoming bigger, sturdier and harder to pop. This will also open doors with a stone block engraved with a glowing omega symbol. However, in later levels the effects can be reversed by breaking an unlit orb, opening up doors with a dark-colored stone block instead, while closing the others, returning all Werepigs back to normal pigs, and vice versa.

The secondary gimmick in this episode are ghost crates that turn nearby blocks into Ghost Bricks, which can be phased through by birds. Some abilities, other objects and structures will damage the ghost blocks. Bouncy mushrooms are also littered in later levels.

Story[]

Beginning[]

The Flock stumble upon an illuminati-like symbol. When the moon is revealed by clouds suddenly moving away, the door opens. Not long after, they are attacked by Werepigs coming out of nowhere inside the cave, now running rampant around the forest they were exploring.

Ending[]

After beating Foreman Pig out of his Werepig form, the Flock returns to the cave to find him and Professor Pig experimenting with a cauldron. Angered, they attack the Werepigs and Foreman Pig, causing the cauldron to explode and nullify the effects of the moon. Professor Pig runs away amidst all the chaos, leaving behind a torn paper with an arrow pointing to a Wormhole drawing.

Trivia[]

  • Hog Moon Rising is named after Bad Moon Rising, a song by John Fogerty.
  • The game files imply that the episode’s original title was going to be Moonlight Mayham. It was presumably changed due to being too similar to Midsummer Mayham.
  • Hog Moon Rising has a multi-phase boss fight like Danger Zone does, although it has just two phases instead of five.
  • Strangely, the game does not display the phase progress bar nor does it display the multi-phase level information pop-up.
  • It is the first episode in Reloaded to:
    • Animate stars, as some of the stars in the main background are part of the image, while some twinkle faintly. This technique is reminiscent of how Angry Birds Trilogy animated starry backgrounds.
    • Have Professor Pig in a game for the first time since Angry Birds Transformers, though his role in Hog Moon Rising's story is uncharacteristically more antagonistic.
    • Fully use the background as an element in the levels, as the pigs turn into Werepigs if the moon is out.
  • Because of the episode's location, theming and ending cutscene, Hog Moon Rising is implied to be a follow-up to A Tweet in the Night and Sowhenge.
  • The episode's boss theme is reused from Angry Birds Dream Blast's 2023 Halloween event. It was likely used to save time and fit the overall tone of the boss fight.
