Jo is a bird that was first teased on Angry Birds social media pages on June 3, 2023, for Pride Month.[3] They are the second non-binary bird in the Angry Birds franchise, with the first being Dusk. Jo's full design was teased the next day with their full description released on the 5th.[4]

Appearance

Jo is a tall black bird with teal markings and long legs. Their wings, when fully stretched out, form a circle shape resembling yin and yang. Their Classic design keeps similar elements with their movie design, except without having legs, a more rounded shape, and black pupils.

Personality

Jo loves dancing and uses their skills and talent to make the world a kinder and better place. They can be a little shy, however.[5]

Like many INFP personalities, they prefer to interact with a selected group of people and create deeper connections and trust. They are very loyal to the people they love and very passionate about the causes they care for.

They are very active in social activism, especially on LGBTQIA+ rights. This is also a way to keep alive the memory of their grandfather Tom, who was one of the very first birds to fight and stand for queer rights.

Overall, Jo is an honest, kind, disciplined, meticulous, and empathetic bird.

Media appearances

Angry Birds: Jo's Stage Flight

Jo was hanging out with their friends, Silver and Melody, when Jo tells their friends that they are upset because they do not know how to shake their tailfeathers, and that being the center of attention isn't really their thing. Melody and Silver then both suggest going to Paradise, which might help subside Jo's fears. However, three Minion Pigs, dubbing themselves the Twisted Tails, take over the all Birds club. This is when Jo finally cuts loose and starts to dance around the dance floor. Hypnotized by their dancing, Jo got the confidence to not only be the center of attention, but also to stop the three Minion Pigs' evil plans.

Game appearances

Angry Birds 2

Jo was included in Angry Birds 2 as a limited-time spell called "Jo's Looove Spell Event", to celebrate Pride Month. Like all of the special spells included in Angry Birds 2, they only appear as a reskin of the Golden Duck spell.

Angry Birds Bounce

Jo is set to make their first playable appearance in Angry Birds Bounce. They serve the same role as the other birds featured in the game, having their own set of currently-unknown abilities.

Trivia

  • According to the Rovio community manager Buck, Jo is based on the superb bird-of-paradise.[1]
  • Unlike Melody, Jo was revealed without any indication of which piece of Angry Birds media they will debut in.
  • Jo's movie design makes them the third bird (outside of the Hatchlings) to have two front toes. The other two being Judge Peckinpah and Matilda.
  • Jo's classic design is based on Angry Birds Toons stock art rather than being based on the classic (pre-Chrome and Chrome) style.
  • Jo is one of the few characters in Angry Birds to not have any voice clips.
  • They are the first bird to have a known relative in the games.
  • Although Jo was claimed to have been created as the first non-binary bird to appear in the Angry Birds franchise, the first non-binary bird was actually Dusk, introduced a year prior to Jo. Therefore, they are the second non-binary bird to appear in the franchise.
