Matilda[note 1] is a character that appears in the Angry Birds series. She is a chicken who can lay explosive eggs.[note 2]
In the Angry Birds Movies, Matilda lives on Bird Island, where she runs "anger management classes", a series of classes made to pacify birds with anger issues. Among those birds were Red, Chuck, Bomb, and Terence, the latter of whom eventually married Matilda and now has four children with her. In the continuity of the games, Matilda lives on Piggy Island, taking care of the three eggs that Red discovered.
Appearance
- Main article: Matilda/Angryverse
Originally, Matilda is an egg-shaped bird who was covered in white feathers. She has a large, oval beak, two small eyes, yellow spots on her cheeks, and three short, black feathers on her head and on her tail. This design was common until 2013, and it has become rare since then.
First seen in the Angry Birds Coca-Cola short, Matilda received a different design. While she keeps the white, egg-shaped body and the large beak from her previous design, her eyes are larger and completely round, and have small eyelashes on them. Her crest and tail feathers were modified as well, being black feathers with pink, round ends. In addition, she now has two feathers on her tail instead of three. The yellow spots on her cheeks were replaced with pink spots, which were implied to be make-up.[15]
In The Angry Birds Movie, Matilda was redesigned once again to be given an anthropomorphic body. Now, her torso is connected to her cone-shaped head without a neck. She now has four larger, more detailed feathers on her crest, and three ones on her tail. In addition, her tail also has three long, curled hair-like feathers. Other minor changes include her eyes being colored green instead of black, and her beak being smaller and with a different shape.
Grenade Bird
The Grenade Bird (or simply Green Bird) is an early design of Matilda shown off in early concept art on the official Rovio Museum website.[14] They have a spherical body with greenish-yellow feathers on its body, that has darker green spots, one on its forehead and two on its right cheek. It has three rectangular black crests on its head, and another three black feathers for its tail. They have dark green rectangular eyebrows, constantly squinting eyes, and a pointed yellow beak.
In the files for the original Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons, Matilda's sprites are internally referred to as "BIRD_GREEN" and her egg bombs are referred to as "GRENADE", which suggests this bird is Matilda's prototype design. Unlike Matilda, this bird would have likely dropped grenades instead of laying eggs.
Personality
Matilda is a very considerate, caring woman, with a great adoration for peace, and a great dislike for violence and destruction. With a maternal-like figure, she educates people with a reprehensible behavior, most notably Chuck[16] and the Blues.[17] Sometime ago, she also gave "anger management classes", to calm down unstable people. However, she is also very firm, and can be somewhat bossy.[17]
In addition, Matilda has a notable respect for nature and animals, talking to the latter and ignoring other people while doing so.[1] She spends most of her time taking care of her garden and watering her plants and vegetables, an activity that she finds calming.[18] She is also a great fan of water gardens, and has wanted one for a long time.[7]
- "[...] And that's so wonderful because I love my flowers so much and if something were to happen to them... I would get mad. So very, very mad. Incredibly, horribly mad. I would be transformed into a vast storm cloud of all-consuming fury and wrath."
- — Matilda explaning Bomb what would happen if she finds her garden destroyed, Angry Birds: Flight School #1
Despite her peace-seeking persona, Matilda is very short-tempered, which is why other people respect and fear her. Whenever she is mocked,[5] disobeyed,[17] or someone does something she finds dislikeable,[16][19] she will burst into anger, completely losing her peaceful mindset, and proceeding to fight them.[19] This does not mean that Matilda is a hypocrite, but that she cannot control herself when she is angry. When she realizes that her anger has hurt one of her friends, which is against her normal persona, she will revert to her peaceful demeanor and find a way to apologize said person.[20] Whenever she sees her own garden being destroyed, she is greatly hurt, leading her to cry or act incredibly furious. She is also very sensitive, bursting into tears when other people tell her, for example, that her food tastes awful.[11][12]
Powers and abilities
Perhaps Matilda's signature ability is her being able to lay explosive eggs, which she can use to deal significant damage to structures and knock down enemies. She gets these abilities from a Jade Egg Pendant she keeps on her person, and loses them when it's not on her[21]. However, in the movie, she shoots violet fireballs instead of explosive eggs. She is also known for her knowledge of magic and healing skills, which she can use to cure her allies and curse her enemies. Matilda can also play the saxophone quite well.[5]
Strength: The eggs Matilda deploys deal great damage to glass and wood and medium damage to stone. Matilda herself, when corpsed after launching the egg, can cause additional damage to structures.
Weakness: The eggs only deal good damage if it hits the base of a building - if it impacts the top, it will only destroy that area. Also, if the egg isn't launched, then Matilda deals poor (but not Blues-poor as it can break 1 block of wood) damage.
Transformations
Monster
When consuming mysterious berries that appeared in her garden, Matilda becomes a large, four-armed, bipedal monster whenever there's a full moon. In this form, she gains exorbitant strength. The effects of the berries fade in and out, and the effect eventually wares off after a few days.
Relationships
The Blues
The Blues see Matilda as a mother figure, as she constantly scolds them for doing wrong things, as exampled in the Angry Birds Toons episode Do As I Say!. The Blues don't like it when Matilda bosses them around and are usually scolded for the things that they do. The Blues also are very aware of her temper and care for her, as exampled in Shrub It In where they don't want to tell her about her rose bush to hurt her feelings.
While the Blues dislike Matilda's cooking, they are aware of her sensitivity and try not to hurt her feelings, however they are unsuccessful.
Bomb
Bomb is one of Matilda's closest friends. In The Angry Birds Movie, the two first met when Bomb was forced by law to attend Matilda's anger management classes. However, Bomb has admitted that he completely forgot about her classes. Currently, Bomb has a mutual respect for Matilda. In addition, it was shown a few times that the he is in love of her; for example, in the map of the Piggy Tower from the newest versions of Angry Birds Friends, Bomb is seen looking at Matilda with a happy expression and with hearts popping out of his head. In Angry Birds Summer Madness, Bomb has a crush on Matilda.
Terence
In The Angry Birds Movie 2 and Angry Birds Reloaded, Terence is Matilda's husband. The two first met when the large bird was forced by law to attend the white bird's anger management classes. At some point, Terence fell in love with Matilda, even confessing her that he loved her through a painting of his. As this made her feel uncomfortable, Matilda left, leaving aside a saddened Terence.[22] However, after she was saved by him, Matilda also fell in love with him, eventually getting married (though in a low-cost wedding[23]) and having four daughters together. Because of how close she is to him, Matilda is one of the very few people who do not fear Terence.[24]

Trivia
- Matilda is the only playable female bird to debut in the original game.
- Matilda, Hal, Silver, and Stella are the only birds to not have any form of Space counterpart for Angry Birds Space.
- However, in 2024, Matilda, Hal and Stella have Space counterparts (all of which are costumes at the moment) in the 3.0 update for Angry Birds Reloaded.
- Original Angry Birds artist Tuomas Erikoinen has "confirmed" that Matilda (referred to as "egg bird") was supposed to be female since her debut.[25]
- Howewer, this is easily contradicted by the whole existence of the Female White Bird, and directly contradicted by what the Angry Birds Twitter account confirmed about her.[26]
- In The World of Angry Birds Official Guide, Mighty Eagle states that Female White Bird and Matilda are the same character.
- An early version of Matilda's Kombo look from the Mighty Eagle wallpaper made her look exactly like a chicken. In the Summer Pignic Short Movie, this is changed to a have a more similar appearance to the classic games.
- Originally, one of Matilda's cheeks became purple when she became a corpse in the slingshot games (to look like a black eye). However, it was redesigned to keep its usual yellow.
- Matilda can play the saxophone, as seen in the Toons episode Epic Sax-Off. This makes her the 6th bird known to play an instrument, the others being Hal, Willow, Poppy, Dahlia, and Luca, in that order. She is followed by Red.
- Matilda is one out of 2 birds that have abilities that involve an explosion, the other is Bomb.
- Matilda, Chuck, and Silver (original design) are the only birds of The Flock to not be circular, as Chuck is triangle-shaped, Matilda is egg-shaped, whilst Silver was shaped like an upside-down trapezoid.
- In Angry Birds Toons, Matilda is commonly shown with a handkerchief, which is usually represented as a hand, as shown in "Off Duty."

Notes
- ↑ In a voiceover of the Angry Birds Toons episode "Run Chuck Run", Matilda's voice actor Antti LJ Pääkkönen referred to her as Matilda McTilson. The canonicity of this fact is unknown.
