"I'm Red! The mighty defender of the nest! The smasher of pigs! The castle-busting wrecking ball!"
Red, Angry Birds Comics #10

Red, originally known as the Red Bird, is the main protagonist of the Angry Birds series by Rovio Entertainment. He is a bird who serves as the de facto leader of the Angry Birds on Piggy Island, a position he takes very seriously. Red is relentless in protecting the flock's three eggs, which he sees as their last hope for their species' survival. Due to the constant thefts of the eggs by the pigs on the island, Red has become increasingly paranoid in his duty, earning him the moniker "the angriest of the birds". As the very first bird appearing in most Angry Birds games, Red has become an icon of mobile gaming, as well as Rovio's mascot.

Despite his young age, Red matured quickly after he discovered the last three eggs remaining on Piggy Island, learning about responsibility and leadership. Being the leader of the Angry Birds, Red knows that the flock can only survive by sticking together, and thus is the one in charge of coordinating the group and its operations. For a long time, Red and his friends have fought against the Piggy kingdom, which engages in constant operations to steal the eggs so its monarch, King Pig, can eat them. For this reason, Red harbors a strong resentment towards the pigs, and longs to see the eggs hatch and be able to embrace his carefree days of the past again.

Concept and creation[]

Angry Birds George gameplay concept

An early sketch by Jaakko Iisalo of an RPG-inspired Angry Birds featuring Red, then called "George".

In early 2009, Rovio was on the verge of bankruptcy and its staff began looking for promising game ideas. One proposal came from Angry Birds senior game designer Jaakko Iisalo, presenting a simulated screenshot featuring angry, limbless birds that was well received by the staff. The game initially had RPG elements and what would become Red was called George, although his lack of abilities meant he risked being omitted from the game.[1][2] The staff liked his attitude, and most elements of the initial design were maintained.[1] Red (initially simply named "the red bird"[1]) was chosen as the protagonist of Angry Birds due to his distinct design and anger-associated color.[2] Lead graphic artist Tuomas Erikoinen made his final look.[1] This design would reappear as a cameo in later games and promotional imagery.

Appearance[]

Red is a round, limbless desert[2] or northern[11] cardinal with red feathers that cover most of his body, hence his name. He has a tuft of two red feathers on his head, and his tail consists of three short black feathers with square ends. The feathers on his belly are peach-colored, and he has three small crimson spots ordered in a horizontal line across his face.

Red bore a different appearance in the animated trailers by Kombo, with an oval body, three feathers on his head instead of two, visible feather texture on his sides, and three rounded black feathers as a tail. The Wreck the Halls short from December 2011, however, returned him to his original design, becoming the most commonly used design for the character starting from Angry Birds Toons. Early on, his feather color was similar to that from the original games, but became a much warmer red from "Dopeys on a Rope" onward.

Personality[]

Angry Birds Trilogy Red profile

Red's profile, from the Wii version of Angry Birds Trilogy.

Though originally carefree, Red matured quickly and began to carry the weight of responsibility when he discovered the three last remaining eggs on Piggy Island.[2][16] Believing that their safety is solely his duty and that they are the birds' only hope for survival, he is overprotective of the eggs and willing to take unhealthy habits to ensure their protection, spending sleepless nights and even entire seasons only looking after them.[8][11][12][13][16] When he is alone, Red has the tendency to tell the eggs bedtime stories and sing them nursery rhymes.[8][12]

Being sort of a father figure to the other Angry Birds despite his young age,[2] Red understands that the flock's strength lies in unity and cooperation, and is thus in charge of coordinating the group's activities and solving any conflicts between his friends; the other birds acknowledge that life would be chaotic without him.[8][11] Red, however, dislikes his friends' supposed recklessness and does not fully trust them with protecting the eggs themselves, so he regularly checks on them on guard duty to ensure they are doing their job properly.[11][12][13] He nevertheless respects the individuality of the other birds and allows them to do their own thing, believing that this will prepare them to guard the eggs without him.[11]

Red can, at times, be overly paranoid and strung. Unable to control himself at times, he immediately enters into a "berserker" rage whenever he feels like something, no matter how harmless it may be, threatens the eggs.[2][6][8][11][12][16][17] The pigs, who are the ones who most frequently steal the eggs, are often the target of Red's wrath, to the point he harbors a deep resentment towards anything that is green or possesses a snout like the pigs.[8][11] He can be so paranoid that he can see things as mundane as the sound of the wind as a threat, and has egg hallucinations and fears that the eggs are in constant danger without him nearby.[8][13] For this reason, Red deeply misses the freedom he once took for granted. He hopes that, when the eggs hatch, there will be peace on Piggy Island and he will be able to embrace his carefree days again.[2][11][16]

Game appearances[]

Angry Birds[]

In the original Angry Birds, and its multiple re-releases, Red is one of the main playable characters, first making his appearance in the very first level of Poached Eggs, or the first level of Tutorial in newer versions. He appears in every episode as a playable character with the exception of The Big Setup. In levels and most cutscenes, he appears in his first design, though the card of Tutorial, the shop, the profiles of The Mighty League, and the cutscenes of Piggy Farm and Jurassic Pork have him in his design from Angry Birds Toons.

Angry Birds Classic Surf and Turf level 1 2

Red being launched to destroy a building, from the international version of the original Angry Birds.

In gameplay, Red can solely be used in the levels where he is featured, once it is his turn to be launched from the slingshot. Red is very weak and struggles against strong structures, so he is mostly used to de-estabilize weaker structures. Red will make a battle cry is the player taps the screen after launching him, but this has no effect. Each Red the player does not use to complete the levels will award them with a bonus of 10,000 points.

Angry Birds Classic Red's Mighty Feathers level 2 2

Red in his unnamed transformation using his new ability, from the international version of the original Angry Birds.

In Red's Mighty Feathers, Red was transformed after being harnessing some of the Mighty Eagle's feathers. When tapping anywhere onto the screen when this Red is launched, he will head towards said direction until he crashes onto something. Nonetheless, he is still as weak as in his normal state. This version of Red also appears as the only playable character in the Egg Defender minigame, in an unlimited number. Here, the player will have to use the least amount of Reds as possible to destroy the pigs' vehicles and prevent them from stealing the egg. Apart from Red's Mighty Feathers, this transformation is also seen in a few levels of Flock Favorites and Golden Eggs.

Angry Birds Seasons[]

Angry Birds Seasons Trick or Treat level 1 2

Red in the first level of Trick or Treat, from the international version of Angry Birds Seasons.

In Angry Birds Seasons, and its Chinese version, Red is a playable character first introduced in the first level of Trick or Treat, or the first level of Hammier Things in the most recent versions of the international version. While the levels and the level selection screens until South Hamerica have him in his design from the original Angry Birds, the level selection screens from Power-Up Test Site, Ham Dunk, Tropigal Paradise, and Fairy Hogmother have him in his design from Angry Birds Toons; while, in the level selection screens from Marie Hamtoinette and Piggywood Studios, he is seen in his design from The Angry Birds Movie. In addition, in the international version of the game, since October 2015, Red can be given optional Bird Hats to wear in the levels, though these are entirely cosmetics.

In gameplay, Red has the same mechanics as in the original Angry Birds with no noticeable differences. He also appears as the powerup Homing Bird, and the Powerbird Telebird. Each Red the player does not use to complete the levels will award them with a bonus of 10.000 points.

Angry Birds Rio[]

Angry Birds Rio trailer The birds meet Nigel

Red and his friends meet Nigel for the first time, from Angry Birds Rio.

In the "Rio" storyline of Angry Birds Rio, Red, Jay and Chuck were all kidnapped and sent to a lair in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The being responsible of the kidnapping, an anthropomorphic cookatoo named Nigel, showed up and revealed that he had kidnapped Red, Jay and Chuck to sell them in exchange of one hundred thousand dollars, due to the flock being part of an "exceptionally rare species".[5] Seeing many other birds trapped inside the lair as well, Red, Jay and Chuck were able to break free and liberate the caged birds, including two macaws named Blu and Jewel, who were united by handcuffs. The Angry Birds, alongside Blu and Jewel, escaped to a jungle as Nigel sent his marmosets to go after them.

After venturing through the jungle and defeating the marmosets and Nigel himself, Red and his group met Rafael, a friend of Blu, who guided them to a beach where they could find Luiz, a bulldog who could take the handcuffs out of Blu and Jewel. After going to the beach, they found Luiz, who managed to separate the macaws from each other. However, Jewel was soon after caught by Nigel.

Angry Birds Rio ending

Red and his friends after returning to Piggy Island, from Angry Birds Rio.

That night, Red and the other Angry Birds ended up in the middle of a carnival, where they defeated Mauro, the leader of the marmosets, and found Jewel, alongside many other kidnapped birds, hidden in a chicken-like vehicle. Just as Blu was about to free his friend, he was interrupted by Nigel, who escaped with him and the other birds as Red and his friends went after them. Ending up at an airplane, the birds managed to get aboard one plane that had Blu, Jewel and Nigel. After freeing the other birds, Red and his comrades had a final showdown against Nigel. When the cookatoo was defeated, he tried to escape, only to be caught by one of the plane's propellers, damaging it. Despite the odds, Red and his flock managed to control the plane and crash-land on Piggy Island, right before the Foreman Pig and a Minion Pig stole their eggs.

In the "Rio 2" storyline, Red and his friends received a postcard from Blu and Jewel, inviting them to go to Rio de Janeiro to visit them. Accepting the invitation, the birds put themselves inside a wooden box that was supposed to be sent to the city. However, they were sent to many different locations throughout the world, and even ended up on the Moon, much for Red's wrath. From there, they entered the earth's atmosphere and landed at the outsides of Rio as they watched the a firework display, for their pleasure.[18] However, they were soon after forced to deal with the remaining hordes of marmosets. Eventually ending up in a harbor, Red and his comrades freed some birds and dolphins, before committing the error of freeing Nigel himself, who had somehow survived the past incident. Later, on a lake, Red and his flock managed to throw Nigel into the water. They and Blu later dealt with the remaining marmosets.

ABRio2 Sprites (Red 1)
Angry Birds Rio Rocket Rumble level 1 2

Red being used in the first level of Rocket Rumble, from Angry Birds Rio.

In gameplay, Red has the same strength as in past games, though he can be even stronger with the Power Potion. In the "Rio" segment, he uses his design from the original Angry Birds, while the "Rio 2" episodes have him in his design from Angry Birds Toons. He is first used in the first level of Smugglers' Den, or in the first level of Playground in the newer versions. When tapping onto the screen when Red is launched, he will scream, but this will not do anything. Each Red the player does not use to complete the levels will award them with a bonus of 10.000 points.

In addition, Red is featured as the powerup Samba Burst. Here, he will be wearing a fruit hat, and will have a happy expression. When he collides onto any surface, he will make all the surrounding objects shake and launch them.

Angry Birds Chrome[]

This game is largely a compilation of episodes from Angry Birds Classic and Angry Birds Seasons, so Red's roll is largely the same as in those games. Red does appear in the game's only exclusive level, Chrome Dimension, taking up the same roll as he does in the other slingshot games. Chrome Dimension lacks a story or cutscenes of any sort, so there's no new story content for Red in the game.

Angry Birds Google+[]

This game features very little in terms of new additions, with the only two episodes to its name. Those being the returning Poached Eggs and Chrome Dimension, as well as Teamwork which, while having the billing of a new episode, is essentially a continuation of Angry Birds Chrome's Chrome Dimension. Needless to say that Red's roll is near identical to his Angry Birds Chrome outing, with the exact same sprites and gameplay.

Angry Birds Volcano[]

Red on the slingshot

Red being used in Angry Birds Volcano

In Angry Birds Volcano, Red appears as a playable character first introduced in the second level of the game rather than being playable in the first level like many Angry Birds games.

Angry Birds Friends[]

ABF Red Happy

In Angry Birds Friends, Red appears as a playable character. Originally, he had his design from the original Angry Birds, though later updates started to show him in his design from Angry Birds Toons. Red is a character that is featured in tournaments, as well as the Piggy Tower and the Star Cup in newer versions. He is first used in the first level of the Piggy Tower which introduces the player to the mechanics of the game. In gameplay, Red has the same strength as in past games, though he can be even stronger with the Power Potion, the King Sling, and/or special slingshots. Originally, when tapping onto the screen when he was launched, he would scream, but this would not do anything. In more recent versions, he does nothing when the screen is tapped. Each Red the player does not use to complete the levels will award them with a bonus of 10.000 points, though this score can be slightly higher in the Star Cup if he is leveled up.

Bad Piggies[]

Bad Piggies Flight in the Night level 17 2

Red in the seventeenth level of Flight in the Night, from Bad Piggies.

In Bad Piggies, Red appears as an enemy. In levels, he is shown with a slightly modified version of his design from the original Angry Birds, though he also makes a small cameo in a cutscene of Tusk 'til Dawn, with his design from Angry Birds Toons.

In gameplay, Red first appears in the seventeenth level of Flight in the Night. He would later appear in most later levels of the episodes, as well as in the first level (and then later) of Tusk 'til Dawn and the last levels of The Road to El Porkado. He commonly appears as one single bird, and it is very rare to see him in mass (apart from a few levels in Flight in the Night, or with other birds such as Chuck and the Blues. At first, he will be sleeping, though he can be woken up with the noise of the player's vehicle. If the camera is not showing Red, an icon showing his location and if he is about to be woken up will appear. If Red is awake, he will try to detect the player's vehicle's presence (or the pig himself, usually he has to be in the vehicle to wake him up. Engine noise with no pig will not affect him, or any other birds.). If he succeeds, he will jump onto the slingshot and launch himself towards the player's vehicle. Red is quite strong, and can damage fragile vehicles, unless the player uses the Super Glue on them.

Angry Birds Star Wars II[]

ABSW2BirdSideMenu

Red's cameo in the title screen of Angry Birds Star Wars II.

In Angry Birds Star Wars II, Red makes a cameo in the background of the Bird Side version of Rise of the Clones and the title screen for the Bird and Pork Sides, as a peach-colored building on Coruscant.

Angry Birds Go![]

Angry Birds Go! 2.0

Red being used in the first circuit of Seedway, from the 2.0.0 version of Angry Birds Go!

In Angry Birds Go!, Red appears as the first default playable character introduced in the first circuit of Seedway, though he can also appear as an opponent in some races and Versus (the latter only in the 1.0.0 version). In gameplay, Red has his own Special Power, which is a boost that will temporarily increase his speed leaving a trail of red feathers behind him. While it is useful at the beginning of the game, the player will soon find that it is not as effective as other characters whose power-ups are also based on speed, such as Chuck or Bubbles, who are much faster than Red.

Angry Birds Epic[]

"Protects the party. A real hero!"
Description, Angry Birds Epic
AB Epic Avatar Image 1

In Angry Birds Epic, Red appears as the main default character. At the start of the events of the game, he and Chuck were minding their business as usual, until they were attacked by hordes of Minion Pigs led by Wizpig and Prince Porky. The pigs managed to defeat the birds in no effort, stole their eggs and their personal equipment, and kidnapped Chuck. Furious, Red ventured through the South Beach and fight the first minions and 2 brutes. He then followed the minions pigs in a cave to rescue his yellow friend. At the Cobalt Plateaus, they got one egg and follow Porky, Monty and their pigs in Cobalt Plateaus. Red and Chuck then approached Porky, Monty and their pigs until they wind up in Matilda's garden. They found Matilda crying because her garden was destroyed by Porky, Monty and their remaining comrades. Red and Chuck arrived there to drive the pigs away and defeat Monty. The white bird soon after joined their group. The three then chased Porky through the Golden Fields, until the pig used his air balloon to escape to Desert Island, which supposed a problem for the flock as they could not cross the Limestone Lagoon that separated Pig Island and Desert Island. Fortunately, Bomb came in with his Bird Ship but not before he got attacked by a Pirate, who stole the ship's rudder. After retrieving the rudder and rescuing Jake, Jay and Jim, who had been surrounded by the prince and some troops for stealing the yellow key, Red and his comrades managed to retrieve the second egg on the castle. Porky sails away into the ocean on another ship of his with an amount of distress.

Later, the flock passed through the Pirate Coast, the Slingshot Woods and the Great Cliffs, before going to the Star Reef. WizPig had a first showdown against the flock and they defeat him to rescue the third egg and collect the blue key. Back at the Great Cliffs, Red, Chuck and Bomb were fooled by the ninjas appearing and blinding them with smoke bombs and kidnapped. Matilda and the Blues follow them through the Bamboo Forest where they defeat the Ninjas and other pigs to rescue Bomb, Chuck and later Red. While Chuck and Bomb were freed, Red's cage was took to the sky by Prince Porky who reappears on his airship. However, as a result, the other birds, with the help of Professor Pig, managed to build their own Airship and rescue the red bird. At the Snowy Peak, they got the fourth egg and ventured through the Islands in the Sky, the Pumpkin Plateau, and the Square Forest.

Right outside of the entrance of Pig City, where the fifth and final egg was, Red and his flock found themselves unable to continue with their adventure due to the walls and catapults blocking their way though. By Professor Pig's advice however, they went to the Moorlands and got a Submarine, which they used to pass through a mine field and enter the city. There, they had a duel against Wizpig. Later, they broke through the castle and got the fifth egg.

In a sudden turn of events, Wizpig revealed his true colors to the others and used his magic to get the egg and King Pig's crown before going to the Hog Head Mountain and make himself a Magic Shield to protect himself there. The flock followed him and managed to destroy the shield by defeating the enemies that protected it. Red and his comrades had a definitive showdown against Wizpig, who was aided by Lefty and Righty. However, the pig was defeated. With his last strengths, Wizpig used his own magic to transform into Demonic Wizpig, a state so powerful that no bird could defeat him. However, with the help of Prince Porky, who gave Demonic Wizpig the final strike, the flock got the fifth egg and King Pig's crown. The group then went back to Pig City and gave the king his crown, with him thanking them.

In gameplay, Red's statistics in Angry Birds Epic are as follows:

Angry Birds Stella[]

ABStellaLostandFoundItem32

Red made a handful of cameo appearances throughout Angry Birds Stella. He first cameoed as a red circle in Willow's painting in her default photograph. His second cameo was in Stella Finds the EggSpark, manifesting the body of Optimus Prime, to promote Angry Birds Transformers (see below). Red's third and final cameo was in an arcade game that featured him on there, most likely being an arcade version of the original Angry Birds.

Angry Birds POP![]

Initially, Red appeared in Angry Birds Stella POP! as a limited character through various events. When the game was renamed to Angry Birds POP!, he became a permanent character, appearing in the "Drop the Pigs" and "Defeat King Pig" levels, replacing Stella. When the Bird Gauge is full, he will be able to use the Rock Pop, where he will be able to pop a short line of bubbles.

Angry Birds Fight![]

ABFightRed

In Angry Birds Fight!, Red was the first out of six playable characters the player could choose to use. Other than being a playable character, he also appeared as an icon in the matching board. Like all of the other birds in the game, Red was customizable to the player's preference, and the player would be able to purchase costumes and weapons for Red with in-game currency.

In gameplay, the player could not play directly as Red; rather, they had to make him attack his enemy by till-matching various small birds. Matching three birds would have popped them out, and matching four or more would activate the specific bird's special ability. If four of Red's icons were matched, then random panels would be blocked out with wooden boxes on the opponent player's matching board.

Once the round was over, the two battling players began fighting, and the player's success would entirely be based on how many points they were able to gather.

Angry Birds 2[]

Ab2-red

In Angry Birds 2, as usual, Red appears as the first playable character in the game. He can also be used in the Arena, as long as the game allows the player to use him. In addition, Red has his own daily event, named Red's Rumble, which can be played on Mondays.

In gameplay, Red can be used in any level as long as the player has a card of his. When tapping onto the screen when he is launched, he will make a small scream that will produce a short, red line. If a building is caught by that line, it will be pushed to the other side. This ability works better in tall, unstable buildings, and will not have much effect in structures that are well held. While Red can normally be used only once, filling the Destructometer can give the player a card with Red, allowing them to use him again. The amount of points Red can gather depends on his Bird Power, which can be leveled up by giving him enough feathers, upgrading the slingshot, etc.

Angry Birds World Tour[]

In Angry Birds World Tour, Red is a playable character who is first used in the first level of North America, and is a recurring character in the other episodes. Similar to past physics-based puzzle games, he has no ability when launched.

Angry Birds Ace Fighter[]

Red once again appeared in Angry Birds Ace Fighter as the icon and main character. He appeared in promotional material and trailers for the game.

Red's Description In-Game:

Red has outstanding leadership skills, but he is nervous all the time. He is liable to mistake the smallest sound as the enemy firing the first shot. He's even mistaken the wind blowing through the trees for the distant oink of the hostile pig.

Rovio announced that the game would be discontinuing due to adjustment of structure platform, as well as an expired contract with Siamgame. On September 6, 2016, the game was removed from the Play and App stores and recharge was turned off, making the game nearly impossible to play. On October 10, servers were shut down.

The gameplay was based on a Shoot em up style, with the player located at the bottom of the screen as the enemies fly downwards from the very top. Not much was known about Red's role specifically in the game. It was known that he was one of 4 different playable characters, and could be paired with different kinds of planes.

Angry Birds Island[]

In Angry Birds Island, Red is a non-playable character. In the game, various Reds appear in red-colored balloons. To free them, the player has to tap two or more balloons of the same colors that are connected. In the story of the game, he also helps the player on re-building Bird Island along with other birds.

Angry Birds Blast![]

ABBlast Red Transparency

In Angry Birds Blast!, Red is a non-playable character. In the game, various Reds were kidnapped and put in balloons. To free them, the player has to tap two or more balloons of the same colors that are connected. They can also use the Slingshot to free one single Red instantly. The Red birds appear in red-colored balloons.

Angry Birds Evolution[]

In Angry Birds Evolution, Classic Red is a variant of Red that can be obtained in events such as the Classic Red Event, his debuting event. His abilities are as follows:

  • Exploding Storm: Kicks a pig and turns it into a whirling storm. All pigs hit by the storm will be drawn aside and blasted over the field in a massive explosion that causes 12347 damage to the affected pigs.
  • Leader Skill: All red birds in the team get +40% attack power.
  • Awaken Skill: Increases the critical chance by 15%!

Angry Birds Reloaded[]

Reloaded Red

In Angry Birds Reloaded, Red reappears as a playable character first used in the first level of Hot Pursuit. He has the same gameplay features as in the earliest games. However, he will do nothing if the screen is tapped when he is launched.

Angry Birds Block Quest[]

Red appears as one of Block Quest's main three birds, being both on the title screen and in gameplay. When appearing on the board, he moves to other lines whenever the line he is on is cleared, allowing for combo setups. If 3 Reds are cleared in a single block placement, Red will appear in a Slingshot in front of the board. The player can then launch red, clearing a 3 by 3 radius of objects. He has no abilities unique to him.

Animated Appearances[]

Angry Birds & the Mighty Eagle[]

Red's appearance mirrors his portrayal in the Angry Birds Cinematic Trailer. Red, along with Chuck and one of The Blues, are admiring The Eggs until one unfortunate Butterfly decides to land on one of the eggs, knocking it over. Red and his band of birds brutalize the butterfly, leaving the defenseless eggs ripe for the pickings. A trio of Minion Pigs take the chance, and a chase ensues. The skirmish ends with the pigs retreating into an unusually well-fortified bunker, and the birds are forced to ask The Mighty Eagle for aid, with the other two birds forcing Red to go to his cave alone. Red nervously offers The Eagle a Sardine Can in exchange for help. The last we hear of Red is him and the other birds cheering as The Mighty Eagle obliterates the Piggy Fort.

Angry Birds Space Origins Short Movie[]

Red and his friends were taking care of their eggs as usual, until they spotted a wormhole in the sky and, falling from it, Ice Bird and an Eggsteroid. Eventually, they saw a large metallic claw fall from the wormhole, which grabbed a chunk of soil with the Eggsteroid and the left with it. Furious, Ice Bird used the group's slingshot to enter the wormhole. While Red and his friends initially did not care about this, they soon after found out that their eggs were stolen as well. Enraged, they used the slingshot to enter the wormhole as well. They soon after found themselves in space, with new transformations, on a quest to stopthe King of the Space Pigs from stealing the Eggsteroids.

Angry Birds Toons[]

Chuck Time[]

Red leads Chuck to a top of a cliff to place the slingshot on top, only for Chuck to accidentally knock Red off of the ledge. Chuck however saves Red in the nick of time.

Egg Sounds[]

When Red was guarding the Eggs, he began hearing noises from them. Ecstatic, he brings Chuck and Matilda over to the Eggs to hear them for themselves.

Cordon Bleugh![]

Red was eating one of Matilda's food, but was afraid to confront Matilda about how terrible her cooking was, afraid that she might get upset.

Piggy Tales[]

Red, Chuck and Bomb were preparing to launch from the Slingshot, only for a Minion Pig to come in and take it from them (causing Chuck to fall down to the ground), leaving all three of them in bewilderment. (Slingshot Delivery)

Angry Birds on The Run[]

One day, Red was launched to a structure until he, alongside Bomb and Chuck, are transported into the real-world. (On the Other Side) While trying to find his way back, Red encountered a lot of strange smells. (Food Hunt)

Angry Birds Slingshot Stories[]

Red appears as a main character in Angry Birds Slingshot Stories. He uses his Toons design in 3D similar to his model for Angry Birds Friends.

Book Appearances[]

Angry Birds: Mystery of the Green Bird[]

When Matilda is showing off a green feather she found, claiming it to be proof of another bird on the island, Red dismisses her. He leaves to take a nap after humoring Chuck's claim of becoming the smartest bird on the island. Red is soon forced to eat crow when an "actual" green bird arrives at their camp. Red is suspicious of the new "bird", even having a nightmare about him cooking The Eggs, but Hard Head proves to be very trustworthy. This charade ends when Chuck accidentally reveals Hard Head to be a Pig in a watering can by burning his can with a magnifying glass. Red discovers this, and immediately punts the pig out of their camp. Red then congratulates Chuck on his accidental success.

Angry Birds: Mystery of the Lost Treasure[]

When Chuck finds a map leading to treasure, The Blues ask to join Chuck in finding it. Red tells them they can't, since they're supposed to be collecting fruit for The Flock's diminishing food reserves. Chuck asks Red if he would like to tag along, but Red declines since he has to guard The Eggs When The Blues inevitably follow Chuck anyway, Red is initially furious. His rage is quelled when the four return with the treasure, which is a box full of food.

Angry Birds: Red Bird To The Rescue![]

During breakfast, Red hears some racket nearby. Red soon discovers that One Of The Eggs has been stolen by a Minion Pig. The rest of the story follows Red going from location to location searching for the Egg, eventually locating it and stealing it back from King Smooth Cheeks.

In addition to his role in the story, Red also has a physical application that comes with the book. There is a socket in the back of the book that allows the reader to puppeteer Red's beak with their fingers. The reader is meant to use this to point at objects on the page when prompted by the book.

Angry Birds: Stella and the Hunt for the Jade Egg[]

When Matilda is found hysterical in the woods, Red is one of the first responders, ordering all the "baby chicks" to stand aside while he inquires about Matilda's condition. When Matilda explains that The Jade Egg, the source of her power, has been stolen, Red seems unconcerned, saying that he'll go find it and ordering everyone else to stay put. While Red is searching around, Stella, Bubbles, and The Blues are able to retrieve the pendant from Pig City by themselves. Despite this impressive feat, Red still refuses to allow Stella to guard the Eggs. Even when Matilda feigns sickness so Red will let the younger birds help her, Red still insists that it will be years before they're allowed to guard eggs by themselves. At the end of the story, Stella swears that one day she'll get Red to let her guard the eggs herself one day.

Kaiken[]

Despite being the series mascot, Red's roles in the Kaiken educational books are unexpectedly minimal, having fewer starring roles than his own girlfriend. As with the nature of books for young children, the stories have little to no stakes and sometimes lack any real plot. Due to the lack of pigs to fight and eggs to guard, Red comes off as friendlier in these stories than his usual, grumpy self. In fact, Red never once becomes visibly angry. His design is similar to his chrome design, only with a more expressive beak and a removal of his outlines.

Red's New Friend[]

This story is the origin of Red's relationship with Girl Bird. The story kicks off with Red napping by the ocean, swiftly being awoken by a rubber duck washing ashore. He tries and fails to befriend the phony foul, and swiftly becomes disheartened. His sadness soon turns to surprise as he soon notices Girl Bird appear from the underbrush. Immediately smitten with her, he offers to be friends. Unlike the rubber duck, she accepts his offer.

Sing The ABCs[]

Red cameos at the end of the book, when he and the rest of his flock profess their desire to sing the ABCs with Girl Bird.

Opposites[]

Red once more cameos near the end of the book, where The Blues point out that he's on the opposite end of the nest from them.

Angry Birds: Where is It?[]

Once again, Red's appearance is limited to the book's end, where he and Girl Bird go off to play with each other.

Angry Birds: Bomb's Best Birthday[]

When Bomb exiles himself from The Flock on his birthday to avoid blowing up out of excitement, Red creates a scheme to launch Bomb's party up to him. He gets the other Flock members to create balloons, a banner, and a cake, and launches everything up to Bomb, who enjoys the gift greatly.

Angry Birds: Cheer Up, Chuck![]

While guarding The Eggs, Chuck comes up to Red, asking him if he needs any help. Red blows him off, telling him to go play somewhere. Red, along with the other Flock members are later bombarded with garbage by Corporal Pig, who they swiftly defeat.

Angry Birds: Stella and the Egg Tree[]

When Red and some other Flock members are playing volleyball, Stella is guarding the nest. Red also arrives at the nest with the others when The Eggs get stolen. When Stella promises to go get The Eggs back herself, Red surprisingly does not object.

Angry Birds: Red And The Great Fling-Off[]

The Great Fling-Off is fast approaching, and Red is determined to win first place. He and Chuck, the winner of last year's Fling-Off, stay up all night training for the event, and end up tiring themselves out. The two wake up right as the event is starting, but notice a group of Pigs making off with The Eggs. Red and Chuck decide to skip the event in favor of saving The Eggs, much to The Flock's adoration.

Angry Birds: The Attack of The Monster[]

Red first appears getting reports back from Chuck and Bomb about the lack of pig activity. Red is later present when The Blues run away from the monster in Matilda's Garden. When the flock launches a raid on Pig City to rescue Matilda, Red stays behind to guard The Eggs. When the monster chases the other birds back to the nest, Red refuses to run away and leave The Eggs behind. Luckily, The Blues manage to trick the monster into falling in a hole, where the flock learn that the monster was actually Matilda under the effects of a strange berry.

Angry Birds: The Tale of a Featherless Friend[]

In an unusual turn of events, Red essentially acts as the book's primary antagonist. When Stella discovers and befriends a strange blob, Red is immediately distrustful of the creature. He sends several Flock members to spy on Stella and her friend, and kidnaps the creature, who turned out to be a mud-covered Pig suffering from memory loss. When Stella decides to bust her friend out of his cage and bring him back to Pig City, Red orders the rest of The Flock to give chase. When Stella is able to evade the Flock, stop an oncoming Pig Patrol, and return her friend home, Red finally recognizes her wits and bravery, throwing a celebration in her honor.

Angry Birds: Captain Badburger[]

When Chuck and Stella disappear, Matilda begins to worry about the pair. While Red does miss them, he believes that the two can take care of themselves, and tells Matilda that they likely set up camp somewhere else. Matilda insists that something foul is going on, and Red soon finds himself agreeing when he spots a couple of mysterious ships hanging about near Piggy Island.

Red's fears are confirmed true when Crossbones the parrot enters their camp, reciting a warning of pirates on the approach. Red rallies his Flock, and prepaires a defense against the oncoming forces of Captain Badburger. While the ensuing battle isn't seen directly, the book states that Red thrashed Badburger and his forces fairly easily. Red later appears to celebrate Stella and Chuck when they return with The Eggs.

Powers and abilities[]

Slingshot 101 Red Running 1

Red running at super speeds, from "Slingshot 101".

Despite not having undergone any notable training, Red is a very skilled and powerful fighter, especially when provoked. He possesses super speed, capable of running over large distances within seconds,[13] even on hazardous terrain like mountains,[19] and swimming at comparable speeds.[20] His strength is one of his most notable abilities: he is strong enough to pick up and throw pigs with ease,[21] and has even been capable of breaking through several layers of walls, as well as a metal wall, within a few seconds with no additional equipment.[22] He is also experienced in hand-to-hand combat, and is adept at using all kinds of melee weapons.[14]

Red demonstrated skill at piloting many kinds of vehicles, and is capable of making brief boosts while driving karts.[15] He has also been shown to have a great durability and resistance against attacks. He has survived massive explosions[23] and falls from extreme heights,[24] and even withstood atmospheric entry once.[18]

Transformations[]

Super Red[]

2EF03C5A-1411-4F4B-9AF0-DEF18F2DF087

Red as Super Red, from Angry Birds Space.

By passing though an extraterrestrial wormhole of some kind, Red can transform into Super Red. In this state, Red has some different body features, most notably his black and white glasses, which he can use to track and analyze enemies. However, most of his abilities remain the same. This transformation first appeared in Angry Birds Space.

Mighty Feathers Red[]

By using a few of the Mighty Eagle's feathers, Red can assume an unnamed transformation. He looks the same as his normal counterpart, except that he is now surrounded by a few white and red feathers. In this state, Red can head himself towards any location he wants to. However, he can only use this ability once before losing the feathers. This transformation only appeared in the original Angry Birds.

Telebird[]

Telebird2

The Telebird, from Angry Birds Seasons.

Through unknown means, Red can transform into the Telebird. In this state, he now wears a magenta and yellow helmet on his head. As the Telebird, Red now can teleport himself and surrounding objects to any place he wants to, allowing him to pass through solid objects. However, he can only use this ability once. This transformation only appeared in the international version of Angry Birds Seasons.

Homing Bird[]

By unknown means, Red can transform into the Homing Bird, where he wears a gray radar on his head. In this state, Red automatically heads himself towards any pig that is near him. However, he can only use this ability once. This transformation only appeared in Angry Birds Seasons.

Optimus Prime[]

When the EggSpark hit Piggy Island, Red transformed into Optimus Prime, the leader of the Autobirds. He can shoot lasers towards Minion Pigs and hit structures. This transformation only appeared in Angry Birds Transformers.

Weaknesses[]

While not having any physical weaknesses, Red is allergic to pollen.[25] As a bird, he can be scared quite easily by a scarecrow, being left stunned and defenseless upon encountering one.[26] He can also be distracted while trying to aim with the slingshot, being scared by almost any sound, including his own flatulences.[27]

Relationships[]

Chuck[]

Chuck Time 003

Red and Chuck, from "Chuck Time".

Chuck is Red's best friend and right-hand bird.[11][28] The two can often be seen together, with Chuck always willing to support and help his friend out. Red appreciates Chuck's devotion and is shown to care about him,[24] acting as a father figure toward him.[2] However, he can be annoyed by Chuck constantly following him around and his antics.[12]

The Blues[]

Angry Birds Toons Episode 11 Red and the Blues

Red attempting to instill discipline on the Blues, from "Slingshot 101".

"The Blues are great. They have so much enthusiasm and energy. Of course, I'd rather they were kept safe in a nest, but every bird needs to do their duty."
Red, The World of Angry Birds Official Guide[12]

The Blues, as the youngest of the Angry Birds, are close friends of Red as well. Like with the other birds, Red acts as a parental figure towards the trio.[2] Although Red admires their enthusiasm,[12] their mischievous and reckless demeanor often annoys him.[19] He attempts to pass his sense of duty on to the Blues, lecturing them every day about responsibility and keeping them in line whenever possible,[29][30] although they tend to find it a burden. Red thinks the triplets are vulnerable due to their early age, leading to him underestimating their true potential.[12][19] Nonetheless, he respects their individuality and mostly leaves them to do their own thing, believing that this will make them better equipped to guard the eggs.[11] Whenever the Blues save the eggs from the pigs, Red spends a while playing with them as a reward.[19]

Bomb[]

Another one of Red's friends is Bomb. Like with the other birds, Red acts as a parental figure towards Bomb,[2] but tends to be miffed by his antics.[31] Red is especially annoyed by Bomb's perceived lack of responsibility and discipline, despite being one of the most powerful Angry Birds, and often sends him to do chores.[12][32]

Terence[]

Red's earliest known meeting with Terence was when the latter freed Red and the rest of the flock out of the pigs' trap. Red has the impression that he can get through to Terence more effectively than the rest of Angry Birds, on account of both of them being cardinals.[33]

Stella[]

Red is also allied with Stella, although their relationship appears to be somewhat strained by the latter's rebellious personality. Red is prone to giving her orders and underestimates her abilities, much to her frustration.[34]

The Mighty Eagle[]

"And don't talk to me about the so-called Mighty Eagle. He's always in his cave, never joining the fight 'til the last moment."
Red, The World of Angry Birds Official Guide[12]

Red refuses to have any contact with the Mighty Eagle, being annoyed by his lack of participation in their fights against the pigs.[12] He believes that the Mighty Eagle has failed the flock by staying isolated[35] and has occasionally attempted to persuade him to join them, but with little success.[36]

King Pig[]

32937484-B0E3-4A49-8919-15D788827739

Red facing King Pig, from "Eating Out".

Red holds a deep-seated hatred for King Pig Smooth Cheeks, the monarch of the Piggy kingdom, rooted on the latter's desire to eat the Angry Birds' eggs. The earliest known incident involving both was when Smooth Cheeks first decided to steal the birds' eggs. Red's overprotectiveness of the eggs comes from King Pig's entitled, childish ways, which further drives his resentment towards the monarch. He hopes that he will eventually defeat the king for good and leave behind his duties.[37] Although Smooth Cheeks' minions have made countless attempts to steal the eggs, the Angry Birds, led by Red, always manage to thwart their plans.

Prince Porky[]

Angry Birds Epic Red and Porky

Red with Prince Porky, from Angry Birds Epic.

Red is in neutral terms with Prince Porky. The two first met when King Pig sent Porky and Wizpig to steal the birds' eggs. While both were initially enemies, they had to team up after Wizpig betrayed the pigs and stole King Pig's crown and an egg. Later, at the Hog Head Mountain, Porky cooperated with the Red and his comrades to defeat Wizpig, who had just turned into Demonic Wizpig. Following that battle, Porky shared a time with the Angry Birds. The current state of Red's relationship with Porky remains unknown.

Trivia[]

  • An officially licensed t-shirt entitled “Nerdy Birdy” showed Red with glasses and a bow tie. The image was so popular that a plush version was created. It should be noted that the Nerdy Birdy is not a new character, just Red wearing a bow tie and eyeglasses.
  • Two versions of Red wearing aviation-related head gear were created for the Angry Birds Asian Challenge completion.
  • Red in the games is one of the more younger characters in the franchise, as in Toons he is almost the same height as characters like Chuck and Hal.
  • Red is the first bird known to play an instrument. He is seen bouncing on a drum in the video, "Thank You: Angry Birds Year of the Dragon Lantern!". The other birds known to play an instrument are Hal, Willow, Poppy, Dahlia, Luca, Bomb, and Matilda, in that order.
  • In Sonic Universe #32 by Archie Comics, a bird that resembles Red appears as one of the inmates, along with Wolf from Star Fox.
  • The first time Red has openly appeared playable in a costume was in the Fuji TV exclusive episode, Sakura Ninja where he appears dressed as a ninja.
  • Red has been known to sing to the Eggs on several occasions, but his singing quality varies between appearances. The Angry Birds Rio Trailer shows him to be on par with other birds, while Angry Birds Comics Issue 7 make a point of how poor his singing is.

Notes[]

  1. "BMUs" stands for "Bird Measurement Units", but has no officially confirmed equivalences.
  2. Red has usually been identified as a cardinal, although sources differ on whether he is a desert cardinal (Angry Birds: Hatching a Universe) or a northern cardinal (National Geographic Angry Birds: Fed up, Feathered, and Furious).
