- "Keep to yourself. It's better that way."
- — Red's motto, The Angry Birds Movie Official Guidebook[7]
Red J. Bird[4] is a primary character whom appears in the Angry Birds Movie series and its spin-offs. He is a bird native to Bird Island, infamous for his large eyebrows and short temper. Born an orphan, Red has long struggled with anger management issues, isolating him from the other birds for most of his life.
In The Angry Birds Movie (2016), after years as an outcast, Red leads the birds in a mission to retrieve their stolen eggs from the pigs, led by Leonard, making him a respected hero within his community. He returns as the protagonist in The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019), where he teams up with Leonard to thwart a plan of Zeta from the nearby Eagle Island. Red is also anticipated to return in the upcoming film The Angry Birds Movie 3 in an unspecified role.
Red's personality was marked by years of rejection from his community, possessing an irritable demeanor and a preference for solitude. Throughout the films, he evolved to being the protector of Bird Island along with his best friends, Chuck and Bomb. Despite this growth, he continues to struggle with occasional insecurities and his temper.
Appearance[]
Red is an anthropomorphic, pill-shaped bird covered in red feathers, hence his name. He has a tuft of two feathers on his head and three black feathers with squarish ends as a tail. The feathers covering his torso are beige-colored, and his face has a horizontal line of circular, crimson spots. Red has distinct thick, black eyebrows, as well as brown eyes. In terms of limbs, he has wings that reach from the bottom of his beak to his waist, as well as short legs with yellow talons.
Personality[]
- "What makes you angry?"
"Being asked all these questions! And slow-moving birds. And loud birds. And late birds. And spoiled birds. And cheerful birds. And birds who stand too close. And birds who complain. And cheerful birds. And that bird who likes to give hugs. And birds who don't respect personal space. And birds who make me do anger management. And cheerful birds. Oh, and did I mention birds who are so dang cheerful that it starts TO MAKE ME ANGRY, and also EVERY BIRD AND THING AND PLACE ON THIS ISLAND?!" - — Questionnaire and Red, The Angry Birds Movie Official Guidebook[7]
Red elbow-striking the Mime for bothering him, from The Angry Birds Movie.
Red is regarded as Bird Island's "angriest bird." His short temper contrasts with the other birds, who are generally characterized by their nonstop cheerfulness.[10] Their constant happiness irritates Red, and many things easily push him to the edge. His wrath can be invoked by virtually anything, to the point he even finds himself frustrated by being hugged or asked questions.[7]
Red considers himself "a very private bird" and indulges in hobbies that he can do alone.[7] His struggle to fit in made him feel like an outcast, exacerbated by his preference for solitude.[10] This drove him to build a seaside hut far from the others, in which he lived for several years.[7] This hut, made of hardened mud stucco, contrasted sharply with the soft, nest-like homes of the other birds. Concept artwork for The Angry Birds Movie depict his garden filled with cacti and a giant spiky palm tree by his front door, serving as a "stay out" sign.[11]
Despite his volatile exterior, Red's temper merely serves to mask his deep-seated discomfort about being an outcast.[10] From a young age, Red was isolated from society, partly as a result of the mockery he received for his large eyebrows,[3] and his brusque nature made it difficult for him to build lasting friendships.[10] Although he generally has good intentions, his temper often lead to social blunders in his early life,[10] including an incident in which he accidentally caused the premature hatching of a family's egg, leading to his court-ordered anger management classes.[3]
Red's anger is matched with an equally intense bravery, a combination of traits that makes him willing to boldly face any challenge head-on.[12] Additionally, he is devoted to protecting the birds' eggs, which he sees as the community's most valuable resource.[10] His initial suspicion of the pigs, who arrived on Bird Island under the leadership of Leonard and the guise of peaceful explorers, was confirmed when they stole the eggs. Red emerged as a reluctant leader, guiding the birds to defeat the pigs on Piggy Island, earning him the respect of the other birds and his integration with their society.[3]
While Red still considers himself his best companion,[6] he has managed to build close friendships with Chuck and Bomb, during his anger management classes. Though he describes them as "cool", he remains reluctant to openly admit his fondness for them.[7] He is also occasionally seen with Matilda and Terence.[12]
Red feeling abandoned by his allies during his truce with the pigs, from The Angry Birds Movie 2.
Red remains dedicated to protecting Bird Island following his first encounter with the pigs, thwarting countless schemes from them since then, but showed a willingness to temporarily put this antagonism aside and team up with Leonard when Zeta, from Eagle Island, threatened Bird and Piggy Islands. Despite his recognition, Red struggles with insecurities, often fearing that he might return to being an outcast to society and even feeling like he was no longer seen as a hero to the people who once praised him after the truce with the pigs. This caused him to consolidate control in the mission to disarm the superweapon on Eagle Island. At one point, he even isolated himself from the group on the island when he was not receiving the attention and praise he was once used to.[4]
Animated appearances[]
The Angry Birds Movie[]
Red hatched alone in his homeland, Bird Island, inside a lost-and-found shelter. His parents were not present during his birth, and Red has not met them since, making him an orphan. He grew up alone, having no relatives or friends. He was often mocked and looked down upon in school, being given the nickname "Eyebrows" by his classmates and peers. Having no one else to look up to, Red joined the belief that Mighty Eagle was real, aspiring and looking up to him as a hero over the course of his life. Feeling ostracized from society in later life, Red would spend 5 years relocating his house from the village to a beach on the shore of the island. Red gained a distain for the other islanders, being frustrated and annoyed by their common disregard towards him. Because of this, Red developed severe anger issues in his early adulthood that further labelled him as an outcast.
At some point, Red took up an occupation as a clown for birthday parties. He is late to one of his jobs and loses his temper over a sarcastic client, which ultimately results in him causing the premature hatching of an egg. Red is taken to court, where Judge Peckinpah proves his anger issues true and sentences him to anger management classes, where he meets Matilda, Chuck, Bomb, and Terence; Red takes a liking to none of them.
When Leonard and first officer Ross arrived on the island, Red was the first and only bird to be suspicious of their sudden intrusion, despite it mainly being because their ship's anchor destroyed the roof of his house. He tried many times to warn the birds of the danger, only for his accusations to be shut down and ignored each and every time. Upon discovering the pig's true intentions, Red attempts to save the eggs with the help of Chuck and Bomb, commanding the two without hesitation. They ultimately fail, but Red receives an apology from Judge Peckinpah the next morning, with Stella commenting that they need a leader. Red takes the position and leads the flock to Piggy Island, instructing the birds to use the slingshot to infiltrate Leonard's castle. Red is the first one to successfully reach the castle, and manages to get the eggs away from Leonard with the help of Chuck, Bomb, and Mighty Eagle. When one egg slips out of the net carrying all of the eggs, Red immediately sacrifices himself to go back for the last egg. Using his anger to his advantage, Red defeats Leonard and rescues the last egg, which soon hatches into The Blues.
Upon returning home, Red finds that the residents of Bird Island have rebuilt his home and moved it into in the village. Red is hailed as a hero, and begins to willingly hang out with Chuck and Bomb, deeming them his friends.
The Angry Birds Movie 2[]
Three years later, Red got a lot of fame and since then he devoted every day to fighting pigs. However, when both islands were attacked by Zeta and the pigs offered a truce to unite against a common enemy, glory began to fade from Red, and he soon began to feel lonely again, because now no one was interested in his merits in the ended fighting pigs. His closest friends Bomb and Chuck decided to take him to a blitz club to find a match for the surly bird. There he met Silver, who, due to her rudeness, immediately rejected him when she began asking him questions about him to see if they were compatible by the formula. The test came back negative, and Red went home alone. There he fell into a depression, and in this state he was discovered by Leonard, who came to negotiate a union. Red was very distrustful of the leader of the pigs, literally killing him a couple of times. However, the king was adamant: he explained that they needed to unite against Zeta in order to repel the attack on both islands. Red realizes that this will be a good way to regain his former glory, and eventually agrees, along the way starting to argue with the pig who is actually the leader of the operation. Together, they recruit Bomb, Chuck, Mighty Eagle, Silver (much to Red's annoyance; however, he couldn't refuse, as Silver turned out to be Chuck's sister) and Courtney. They begin to make a plan, and at a visual presentation of the plan, Red and Leonard continue to squabble until Silver seizes the initiative.
Later, they are about to leave in Leonard's huge submarine. Along the way, Red tells the people of Bird Island that there is nothing to worry about and that evacuation is not needed. On the boat, they meet the genius inventor Garry, who introduces many of the gadgets he has designed, which later turn out to be useless. Red angrily criticizes the pig's inventions, but Silver tries to calm him down by trying to teach Red about teamwork.
When the team arrives at Eagle Island, Red discovers that his comrades already have a plan that they made without him. Angered, he separates from the team and goes to storm Zeta's base alone. Silver goes after him in an attempt to dissuade him, and later decides to go with him. Together they get to the mouth of a long-extinct volcano, where Zeta's base is located. Red notices the eagles' weapon power cord, which he decides to unplug, and recklessly throws himself down on the untethered cable, but Silver saves him by tying himself to the other end and jumping with him. After Red's failed attempt to zip-line to the other side of the base (he still has to accept Silver's help) and after they almost let themselves be discovered when Red dropped his feather down (Silver had to catch it by jumping down), they still manage to cut the cable. However, it turns out to be a microwave cord and the two are caught, with Red being knocked out by an unusually muscular guard.
Waking up, Red finds himself frozen to an air mattress in a room where Zeta explains to him and Silver (who is also a prisoner) her plan to take over the two islands. Specifically, she attacks Bird Island, and Red realizes he made a mistake by not telling the residents to evacuate. Silver manages to free himself and Red, and later the rest of the team reunites with them. They develop a new plan, and according to this plan, Red is sent along with Silver to neutralize the device from the inside. Along the way, they begin to sympathize more and more with each other. Together, Red and Silver fall into one of Zeta's ice balls in order to destroy the weapon with this ball. Just before the collision, they join hands.
However, a flaw in Silver's plan is discovered when they go the wrong way, and the entire team is captured. But the situation was eventually resolved thanks to the unexpected return of the Mighty Eagle, Red's suggestion to stop the weapon's projectiles with a superthread, and the efforts of Chuck and Silver. Zeta travels with Mighty Eagle and her daughter to Bird Island and a wedding takes place where everyone praises Red again. However, seeing that his girlfriend Silver did not receive well-deserved applause, he draws the attention of the crowd to her, and Red still receives well-deserved fame. Later, they decide to retire to a high cliff for a romantic picnic. Unfortunately, they are interrupted by Chuck.

Red's Got The Blues[]
In this story, Red is convinced by The Blues to let them tag along with him to the ceremony for Judge Peckinpah's new statue. The Judge himself soon arrives, and gives Red a hard time over his dismissive attitude. Red struggles to be interested, as he wants nothing more than piece and quiet. Little do Red or Peckinpah know that The Blues took a disliking to the Judge's condescending attitude and snuck a peppershaker into his pocket.
Once the ceremony begins, Cyrus immediately begins sneezing uncontrollably, soon knocking the Judge off his feet. Peckinpah swiftly discovers the peppershaker, and begins blindly accusing Red, chewing him out over how untrustworthy he is. While he and Red argue, the judge discovers the blue feathers in his pocket, and finally pins The Blues for the crime. Despite them almost getting him sent to court, Red comes to the three's defense, pointing out that they're just kids. The Judge orders Red to take The Blues home, and Red leaves in a huff. The story ends with Red returning home, glad to have some piece and quiet.
What's Bothering Bomb?[]
Red appears in a supporting role at the beginning of the book. He, Chuck, and Bomb are at a picnic, when Chuck presents a surprise container of organic worms. The picnic ends when Bomb gets too excited over the worms and explodes.
Game appearances[]
Angry Birds Friends[]
Red's debut was in Angry Birds Friends as a part of a special tournament to reveal the first image for The Angry Birds Movie which was called Sneak Peek Tournament with portraits of Red, Chuck and Bomb being hidden in wood, bricks, or bands in the levels. The blockers would be destroyed as the player destroyed the tools the pigs had.
Angry Birds Transformers[]
Red appears in a former loading screen in Angry Birds Transformers, seen playing with some Transformers figures whilst wearing an Optimus Prime helmet.
Angry Birds Action![]
In Angry Birds Action!, Red appears as the first and default character the player is given. In gameplay, he can run towards a direction by pointing him at a target and shooting. Red would then hit and bounce off of targets until he ran out of speed. He can only do this three times, and he will disappear afterwards.
Angry Birds Football[]
In Angry Birds Football, Red appeared as the only playable character, as a member of the team Mighty Feathers. For the first time in an Angry Birds game, Red used his design from The Angry Birds Movie, in promotion of the film.
In gameplay, the player could upgrade Red' skills, in different categories that ranged from pace, power, technique, and defense that helped the birds' performances. These skills could be raised by training the birds or using in-game currency to upgrade them instantly. To win, the player had to pass the ball around in a special arrangement to the other birds in order to make the goal.
Angry Birds Holiday[]
In Angry Birds Holiday, Red once again appeared in the icon of the game, and also appeared in promotions and trailers for the game. However, while most Angry Birds games include Red as the main leading character, Matilda actually took on this role rather than Red, guiding the player through the game. Because of this, Red did not have as much of a part in this game, though he did appear as non-playable character.
As said before, Red did not have much involvement in this game. Because of this and the fact that the game didn't finish development, not much is known about Red's gameplay. It was known, however, that Red could be purchasable with in-game currency along with his Holiday Shop. From there, Red and his shop would appear in the player's customizable map.
Angry Birds Evolution[]
In Angry Birds Evolution, Red serves as the icon character of Angry Birds Evolution. He appears as an unlockable character and is unlocked after beating the Yellow Desert. He can also be obtained in events with stronger stats.
