Smugglers' Plane is the sixth chapter of Angry Birds Rio and the "Rio" section of the game, with the first part releasing in November 2011 and the second part in January 2012. It is the finale of the main story of the game, as well as the last episode of Rio in Angry Birds Trilogy. Smugglers' Plane introduces both Hal and Bubbles, and concludes with a boss fight against Nigel. The chapter has 30 main levels and six bonus levels, like most of this game's episodes.
Description[]
Smugglers' Plane takes place inside the eponymous aircraft at flight. The background has a maroon, concave wall with precarious sheets all over it, as well as doors, parachutes, and windows that show a cyan sky with small clouds. The foreground features a long line of empty cages.
Story[]

The ending cutscene of Smugglers' Plane.
After successfully boarding the plane following the events of Airfield Chase, the Flock frees all of the kidnapped birds there, ultimately fighting Nigel. Upon his defeat, Nigel breaks out from a window and attempts to escape, but crashes into one of the plane's rotors, damaging it. The Angry Birds pilot the plane back to Piggy Island, crash-landing next to their nest and fortuitously thwarting a pig plot to steal the eggs.
Gameplay[]
Smugglers' Plane introduces two new characters: Hal[note 2] and Bubbles. The episode's some major addition are fire extinguishers that make a weak explosion when broken. Similarly to Smugglers' Den, the chapter predominantly features chains and cardboard boxes, as well as the decorative ceiling lamps from that episode. Smugglers' Plane also makes extensive use of the gimmicks introduced in Airfield Chase, namely the platforms, oil barrels, and iron blocks.
Overview[]
Smugglers' Plane has 30 main levels. The first 15 released on November 22, 2011, on the Android, iOS and Nokia versions.[1] The remaining 15 were released on January 26, 2012. That same day, the episode also released on the PC and Mac versions.[2] Smugglers' Plane is also the last episode of Rio in Angry Birds Trilogy.
Levels 1 through 15 were originally called "11-1" to "11-15" and levels 16 through 30 "12-1" to "12-15". This nomenclature was removed in the 1.7.0 update in July 2013.
Image | Level | 3-star score[3] | Tips |
---|---|---|---|
![]() |
1 | 80,000 | The first Red should be launched slightly below the stone boulder on the second structure. The destruction is inconsistent but should at least clear the right half of that building. The next Red should then destroy the rightmost structure, while the third one should aim for the leftmost tower. If needed, the final Red may be used. |
![]() |
2 | 99,000 | Both Matildas should be aimed straight towards each stack of crates, dropping their eggs as late as possible. |
![]() |
3 | 75,000 | Matilda should be lobbed slightly over the cardboard boxes of the first tower, dropping her egg late to push the structure rightwards. Alternatively, she can be launched in an upward angle and precisely drop the egg to the right of the tower, with similar results. Chuck can then detonate the TNT in the second structure. |
![]() |
4 | 73,000 | The first Chuck should fly through the first sand block and to drop the elevated TNT crate. The next Chuck should then be lofted in an upward angle to destroy the second and third sand blocks, clearing most of the level. Both Reds can then break the remaining cages. |
![]() |
5 | 71,000 | Matilda should be launched slightly over the palmtrees, bombarding the suitcases and dropping the TNT in the far right, which causes the wheelwarrow to hang over the edge. Bomb should explode there to clear the rest of the level. Chuck may be used too. |
![]() |
6 | 122,000 | Chuck should be lobbed upwards, aiming to destroy the sand block in the middle or the plank above it, either through a direct hit or with the TNT below. With the right half cleared, Hal should hit the right half of the second tower to destroy it. |
![]() |
7 | 77,000 | The player should use Red to destroy the cardboard boxes supporting the first structure, enabling the first Chuck to knock the middle structure down. This in turn gives the second Chuck a path towards the bottom crates of the final building. The third Chuck may be used if necessary. |
![]() |
8 | 85,000 | The first Chuck should clear a path for the second Chuck to strike the left foot of the tower. The remaining birds may be used to clear the remaining cages. |
![]() |
9 | 95,000 | Red should detonate the TNT on the left to clear the left part of the main structure. The first Chuck should destroy the first sand block inside, while the other Chuck should knock the stones in the top right to destroy the rightmost cages. |
![]() |
10 | 67,000 | The first Matilda should be used to destroy the suitcases on the far left and the structure to its right. The next Matilda can clear most of the middle, and the final Matilda can be knock the final structure rightwards. |
![]() |
11 | 79,000 | The player should launch Matilda rather low, making her drop her egg either to the left or above the leftmost cage. A lucky shot will result in the entire level collapsing, although Chuck may sometimes be used for clean-up. |
![]() |
12 | 98,000 | The first Chuck should drop the fire extinguishers in the middle, causing them to explode and clear part of the level. The destruction is inconsistent, but one or two Chucks can sometimes claim enough points for three stars by clearing each half. |
![]() |
13 | 75,000 | The player should launch the first Chuck either towards the left tip of the topmost platform, destroying it with the correct angle and clearing most of the level with some luck. The second Chuck should be precisely launched, generally without boosting him, through the bottom-left cage and towards the one in the middle. |
![]() |
14 | 89,000 | The player should progress from left to right by firing the first Bomb towards the leftmost cage to take out the first tower, having the second Bomb destroy the one in the middle, and using Matilda to topple the final structure. |
![]() |
15 | 79,000 | The Blues should be launched upwards, splitting soon after to break the glass pane on the top left and detonate the TNT in the far right. A precise upward shot of the first Chuck will get him through the structure and to the bottom, causing debris to knock it rightward with some luck. |
![]() |
16 | 74,000 | After the hanging TNT block has settled, the player should use Red to drop it directly below, destroying most of the level for the first Chuck to clear what remains. |
![]() |
17 | 77,000 | Matilda should drop her egg near the caged red bird. After most of the level has been cleared, Hal should be used to destroy the remaining cages and knock what remains of the structure further leftwards. |
![]() |
18 | 88,000 | Hal should be launched backwards and redirected towards the TNT in the middle, destroying all three structures. Bubbles should then be launched to where the third building was to break the remaining cages there. |
![]() |
19 | 90,000 | The first Chuck should be fired towards the stone boulder on the left, giving Terence a clearer path towards the TNT in the middle. The second Chuck can then topple the tower on the right. |
![]() |
20 | 93,000 | Blu should knock the wooden pillar with the stone boulder into the main structure, destroying the first two floors. Matilda should be launched towards the latter, dropping her egg late. While inconsistent, this should destroy the entire building. Chuck should then break the rightmost cage. |
![]() |
21 | 166,000 | The first Bomb should destroy the tower on the left, giving Bubbles a shot towards the red caged bird in the middle, clearing most of the second structure. The player can then finish off with the second Bomb. |
![]() |
22 | 87,000 | The first batch of Blues should be used to weaken the top right portion of the leftmost structure and the left half of the rightmost one. Bubbles should then be fired in an upward angle, to the tall cage in the middle of the level, inflating before impacting the ground. This clears most of the level, allowing the second batch of Blues to destroy the remaining cages. |
![]() |
23 | 82,000 | The player should use the one of the first batch of Blues to destroy the glass panes supporting the first tower. The first Matilda should then be launched rather low, dropping her egg on the gap between the first two towers to knock the second one down, sometimes triggering a domino effect. The remaining birds can then be used to finish off the level. |
![]() |
24 | 90,000 | A horizontal shot of Hal will cause him to break the platform in the middle of the first structure, destroying most of it and, rarely, the second building. Matilda and Chuck can then be used for clean-up. |
![]() |
25 | 65,000 | The first batch of Blues should be fired through the gap between the cages of the first tower, splitting as late as possible to clear the second one as well. The second batch should be precisely split to destroy the top left sand block and the cages below. With some luck, this destroys all cages, although Red may be used for clean-up. |
![]() |
26 | 95,000 | The first Terence should fly through the chain holding the fire extinguisher and into the top right cages. The second Terence should then slam into the second structure, causing its boulders to roll into the TNT in the first building, destroying it as well. Matilda may be used for clean-up. |
![]() |
27 | 73,000 | One or two Chucks should aim for the crate in the middle of the first building. Destroying it will level the structure. The other Chuck should then be fired to the left foot of the second structure. |
![]() |
28 | 115,000 | Blu should knock the first structure rightwards, clearing the left half of the level. Bubbles, meanwhile, should inflate as far to the right as possible to destroy the rightmost building. Terence may be used for clean-up. |
![]() |
29 | 75,000 | Bubbles should be fired in an upward angle, towards the leftmost cage. Inflating here will make him destroy most of the level. The Blues and the first Red can then free the remaining caged birds. |

Golden Mango locations[]
As with other Rio episodes, Smugglers' Plane has 15 collectibles, called Golden Mangos, hidden across the episode. Collecting all of them unlocks the "Golden Mango" Bonus Level.
- Level 2: The simplest way to obtain the first Golden Mango is to launch a Matilda in an upwards, backwards shot, and making her drop her egg shortly after. Although this requires some trial-and-error, the mango can be obtained if Matilda manages to destroy the lone crate in the far right.
- Level 5: The mango is inside a crate at the top right, which can be destroyed by Matilda or Chuck.
- Level 7: This Golden Mango is inside one of the cardboard boxes close to the slingshot. The easiest way to obtain it is to launch a bird straight downwards, getting him to roll down to destroy the box.
- Level 10: The mango is beneath the second and third Matildas. The player should make the third Matilda drop her egg in this spot to claim the collectible.
- Level 12: This mango is inside a hanging oil barrel above the slingshot, which can be destroyed by launching two Chucks towards it.
- Level 13: The Golden Mango is inside the large wheel behind the slingshot. The player can destroy it by flinging a Chuck downwards and backwards, ultimately getting him to push the wheel further leftwards for another Chuck to strike.
- Level 15: The mango is inside the ground the slingshot is on. Matilda should drop her egg on the iron framings to the left of the slingshot to claim it.
- Level 16: The player should launch a Chuck towards the crate in the top right, or the sand block under it, to claim this level's mango.
- Level 18: This level's Golden Mango is inside the hanging lamp above the slingshot, and can be obtained with a shot towards it.
- Level 21: Matilda should use her egg to propel herself towards a cardboard box in the top right of the level, which contains this level's mango.
- Level 22: Launching Bubbles straight down, to destroy the labeled glass block beneath the slingshot, will reveal the Golden Mango nearby to be grabbed by one of the Blues.
- Level 26: Terence should push the boulders in the top right further rightwards to cause one to roll down and to a lone TNT crate with the mango.
- Level 27: The player should launch a Chuck towards the lone crate in the top right to claim the mango in this level.
- Level 29: The penultimate Golden Mango is inside a crate inside the platform the slingshot is on, although inflating Bubbles directly above it will destroy the crate most of the time to claim the mango.
- Level 30: The final Golden Mango is hidden inside one of the indestructible crates in front of the slingshot. It can be obtained by detonating either Bomb or Matilda's egg onto it after using the previous birds to clear the boxes above.
Bonus levels[]
As with other episodes, Smugglers' Plane initially had two bonus levels, acceeded through the Awards Room: one for beating the chapter, and another for finding all Golden Mangos. With the 1.5.0 update in December 2012, Smugglers' Plane received four new bonus levels: three are unlocked by gathering 30, 50, and 70 stars in the levels respectively; and another can be accessed by attaining Total Destruction in seven levels.[4] The latter level is inaccessible in the PC and Mac versions due to the Mighty Eagle not being present there. Since the 2.4.0 update in the mobile version, the player can unlock bonus levels in exchange of a certain amount of Bird Coins.[5]

30 Star Bonus Level | 90,000 | Chuck should take out the cage with the green and blue birds in the far right. The right half can be cleared by making Matilda drop her egg between the cart and the stack of crates. Finally, Terence can destroy the tower on the left by striking the lower stone slab on the left of the structure. |
![]() |
50 Star Bonus Level | 79,000 | The Blues should aim towards the bottom-left glass block of the first building. With some luck, this destroys the structure. Chuck should then fly through the three chains above, timed for when the first TNT is swinging to the right, to clear the rest of the level. The second batch of Blues can break the cages in the far right should those survive. |
![]() |
70 Star Bonus Level | 80,000 | The player should fling Red slightly over the leftmost crates and to the middle of the first structure, reducing it to rubble. The first Chuck should then fly through the top half of the penultimate tower, to destroy the large crate supporting the rightmost structure. Finally, the cages in the middle can be broken by the second Chuck. |
![]() |
10 Feather Bonus Level | 130,000 | The first Chuck should be aimed at the iron triangle at the tip of the platform above, in such a way that he rolls down onto the TNT next to the left towers. The second Chuck should then detonate the TNT in the second truck above. Finally, the third Chuck should destroy the cages in the truck at the bottom. |
![]() |
Golden Propeller Bonus Level | 84,000 | Chuck should be aimed to the middle of the stone slab in the structure above, pushing it rightwards and, with some luck, causing the debris to clear the right half of the level. One Hal should then destroy the support of the leftmost tower, while the other should fly through the center-right building and the chains in the middle, dropping boulders onto the remaining cage below. |
![]() |
Golden Mango Bonus Level | 130,000 | Chuck should be fired towards the sand blocks in the top right, triggering a chain reaction that clears the middle and right of the level. Hal should then fly straight to the large crate in the first structure to make it crumble. |
