The Angry Birds Movie is a film franchise based on the Angry Birds video games, created by Sony Pictures Animation and Rovio Entertainment Corporation. Its first instalment, The Angry Birds Movie, was premiered in 2016 and its sequel, The Angry Birds Movie 2, premiered in 2019. A second sequel, The Angry Birds Movie 3, is set to release at an unknown date.
The series is best known for making several drastic changes from the source material, with the most notable being the redesigns of the birds and the pigs. Other changes include the birds' home being changed from Piggy Island to the new Bird Island, how Bubbles has been changed from a young child (only being able to communicate with childlike babble in literature) with a knack for candy to an adult who doesn't care about confectionary, the complete reform of Silver's character, and the removal of most of the pigs, most notably King Pig, who has been replaced by his father, Leonard Mudbeard. Many of these changes would be applied to the games, such as Bird Island and Leonard.

The Angry Birds Movie is the first film in the series, starting production in 2012 and releasing in 2016.[1] Red is a grumpy bird on Bird Island, an island populated by entirely happy, flightless birds who don't have any knowledge of the outside world. Red's grumpiness has made him lonely outcast, and one incident of his anger got him sentenced to Anger Management Class. The class is run by Matilda and it contains Chuck, Bomb, and Terence, all of which being characters from the original Angry Birds series. However, when a group of pigs led by Leonard visit Bird Island to seemingly to create an alliance with the birds, Red has great suspicions, as they destroyed his house. Red, Chuck, and Bomb team up to find out what the pigs are really up to, also trying to get the legendary Mighty Eagle to help.
The Angry Birds Movie first premiered in theaters on May 7, 2016. It received mixed reviews from critics but succeeded at the box office, grossing $352.3 million at the box office at a budget of $73 million.

The second film in the series, it starts with the birds and pigs continuing their battles through pranks. Red became a hero along with Chuck and Bomb due to their efforts in the battle of Pig City. However, when Leonard discovers a frosty third island led by frustrated eagle Zeta, who wants to colonize Bird and Piggy Island and make them her own perfect vacation spots, he starts a truce with the birds to try and stop this new threat. Red initially does not trust Leonard but he is eventually persuaded to team up with the pigs. They recruit Bomb, Chuck, Mighty Eagle, and newcomer Silver, Chuck's sister. They set out to infiltrate the new Eagle Island and stop Zeta's plans.
The Angry Birds Movie 2 first premiered in theaters on August 2, 2019, celebrating the tenth anniversary of the series early. Despite receiving mixed to positive reviews from critics, it underperformed at the box office, only grossing $154 million on a budget of $65 million.
The Angry Birds Movie 3
- Main article: The Angry Birds Movie 3
In a now edited article post on the Minecraft website, the author mentions that a sequel would release in the summer of 2022, however it deleted due to a mistake in the release date because season two of both Angry Birds: Summer Madness and Angry Birds MakerSpace were released that summer but the possibility of the sequel is not denied.[2]
According to Alexandre Pelletier-Normand in an interview with the Angry Birds Network Twitter account on Discord, Rovio are working on plans for The Angry Birds Movie 3.[3]
While Jason Sudekis and Josh Gad are confirmed to reprise their roles as Red and Chuck, the plot is completely unknown.
On June 6, 2024, a production announcement trailer for The Angry Birds Movie 3 was released by Rovio and Sega on YouTube, X, and Facebook.[4]
On April 8, 2025, an Instagram post from the AngryBirdsMovie account included information on the release date and new casts. This includes the return of Rachel Bloom and Danny McBride. A blog post by Rovio would add on the involvement of Paramount Pictures.
Bubbles Twitter gags
There were gags by John Cohen, producer of the first and second film via Twitter on August 23, 2019, said "His name is Bubbles - and he will be back." to a tweet of Hal being in The Angry Birds Movie 2. Ian Hecox replied to John's tweet with an "eyes emoji" possibly referencing his role as Bubbles.[5][6]
Trivia
- Luca is the only recurring bird who did not appear in either of the films.
- The films seem to use an outdated version of the Angry Birds continuity, as despite being one of the first pieces of Angry Birds multi-media to start production, many newer facts had been confirmed about the series before its release. Aside from the ones listed above, a few instances of retroactive continuity include the following:
- Despite the fact that the book The World of Angry Birds Official Guide states that King Pig's ancestors ate many eggs, Leonard in the first movie states that he was the first pig to even find eggs, debunking this.
- The fact that the birds don't know anything outside their island (Chuck asks Red what a pig is and Stella claims there is no other place besides Bird Island when the pigs introduce themselves) doesn't make very much sense considering that Terence's cousin, Tony, comes from Finland and that characters from Angry Birds Stella, such as Gale and Willow, originate from Golden Island instead of Bird Island.
- However, in May 2022, the Angryverse was announced featuring different Angry Birds universes which have some differences such as in the Dream universe, the birds and pigs are babies and/or toddlers.
