The Angry Birds Movie 2 (or simply Angry Birds 2) is an upcoming 2019 computer-animated action comedy film based on the Angry Birds franchise by Rovio Entertainment Corporation, produced by Columbia Pictures, Rovio Animation, and Sony Pictures Animation, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It is the sequel to first film: The Angry Birds Movie - which was released in 2016, the film is directed by Thurop Van Orman, from a screenplay by Peter Ackerman, Audrey Niffenegger, Dave Polsky and Jason Sudeikis (who also voices Red in the films). It is currently scheduled for release on August 16, 2019. The film is the second film in the film series.

Synopsis

King Mudbeard, ruler of the Bad Piggies, plots revenge against the Angry Birds after they devastated his homeland in a prior battle to reclaim their eggs, leading to a comical war that seemingly does not end until a mysterious purple bird, Zeta, threatens them all with her own plans for conquest after being fed up with living in a remote, arctic island. To avoid a frozen fate, the Birds and Pigs may have to make an impossible choice to forge an uneasy alliance against Zeta and in doing so embark on a new adventure.

Production

On August 25th, 2016, Rovio's CEO Kati Levoranta announced that they had began planning for the sequel for the Angry Birds Movie. Not much other information was given, but it can be safely assumed that it would take a long period of time for it to develop, since Rovio had taken 4 years with the initial pilot. On April 26th, 2017, it was announced that the sequel would be on September 20, 2019. The film will be directed by Thurop Van Orman and co-directed by John Rice. It will be produced by John Cohen and Peter Ackerman, Audrey Niffenegger, The Buzz On Maggie creator Dave Polsky and Jason Sudeikis (the voice of Red) will co-write the screenplay.

Marketing and release

Very little information about the film's plot and characters were revealed until Sony eventually released a teaser trailer and poster for it on February 21, 2019.

The film is scheduled to be released on August 16, 2019, to mark the 10th anniversary of the release of the original Angry Birds game. The film was originally scheduled to be released on September 20, 2019, but was moved ahead twice to September 6, 2019, and then August 16, 2019.
